Hey i have a 18-55mm Nikon lens that comes standard with the D60 and I got some 55mm lens filters but they do not fit. Either that or I don't know how to install them.
What size did I need to get? |

It's printed on your lens bezel.
Or you could go to the camera shop where doylnea went the other day, as they seem to have universal filters that fit any size lens. |

| lol, yeah, "they'll all fit" they told me. Just try to jam it on there, maybe use a really sharp pointed screwdriver near the lens too. |

Sounds like you got tripped up by lens's focal length, which is different than the measurement you need to know for buying filters. As the others mentioned, I believe all standard Nikon lenses are threaded for 52mm. |

The most common Nikon "consumer grade" lenses, around 200mm and below usually have 52mm objectives. When you go higher though, the objective gets bigger. The $480 70-300mm VR I'm looking at is 67mm. The prime f2.8 zooms such as the $1500 70-200mm start around 77mm. |

I was looking at the 70-300mm VR as well. Can't decide if I want that, or the 50-200mm VR |

Sorry this is going off-topic but if you guys are serious about getting the 70-300mm lens, keep tracking the live.com rebate deal at slickdeals. As of now, you can get 20% off the lens if you find an eligible seller on ebay, but it was 25% off yesterday and even 35% off a little while ago.
The only con is that buying a lens off ebay isn't ideal.
I really don't find myself using the zoom that often so I couldn't justify buying that lens. I'd rather put that money towards a 30mm lens. I got a 2x teleconverter to make the 55-200mm lens a 400mm lens and it works fine for me. I can post some pics if you want to see what the photos look like. |

Yeah, I don't feel the need for zoom too often. However, I think the extra reach would come in handy. I like to do a lot of nature photography, so it would definitely help with getting shots of animals. |

I use the zoom all the time, so far I'm doing far more distant subjects than up close or wide angle stuff. I still want a nice 50mm 1.8 or so lens, though.
I had considered the teleconverter as a cheap interim solution, but changing lenses itself is hassle enough, I don't know that I'd want to be bothered with a TC too. |
