| I'm looking to start playing for actual money instead of the freerolls. I searched but all threads were over a year old and I'm sure things have changed. Can I sign up if I'm not 21. Also, what are some good sites to play? I've been doing 5000 people freerolls at ultimate poker and have been doin pretty well so I want to see what I can do with real money. Thanks. |

| Yes, CCU is my site. I use credit card...but my Citi card doesn't work ("hostile bank"). Chase Freedom (VISA) has worked fine. |

In my opinion, Pacific Poker is the "best" poker for most US players. The community is active and the software is quick, intuitive and attractive. There's a decent sign-up bonus as well. |

first of all, FUCK FULLTILT
I would suggest PokerStars, not quite as big of payout for FON , but it is the place to be especially for tournaments, which i'm assuming you'll be playing in place of the freerolls you have been playing. I deposit through Epassporte, but make sure you are putting on $100, because they charge you $5 for any deposit all teh way up to $100, after $100 it is $10 up to $200, and so on...
Only thing against Stars is that they don't have the big deposit bonus's, but playing small money or tournaments most sites it is very very hard to clear the bonuses to actually get payment anyways...
PM me if you need anything, i can try to help you to the most of my ability... |

| I do believe that Michigan (if that's really where you are) is one of the states that has explicitly banned online poker. I'm in another one of those stales (Indiana) and I can't even sign up at most sites any more. I would be very careful. If you do find a site that will let you in, don't keep too much money there because you never know when your account will be locked. I personally lost a couple hundred dollars and know a few people who lost thousands just from playing at the wrong sites when the new legislation passed. |

I've only played on fulltilt and sportsbook. Both are OKAY IMO. I've never cashed out, so I stopped playing. I think the games are rigged. They make money off rake, so the bigger the pot size, the more rake the website makes. For example, you'll have a 10 high flush, and you'll be going against someone who also has a flush, only theirs is Q high. Either person cant really fold. So basically the person with the 10 high flush is getting suckered in to wasting more money. Atleast it seems that way for me. You have no idea how many hands I lost because of that.
I heard sportsbook is a bitch to withdraw from anyway.. Same with fulltilt. They have no problem taking your money, but when you go to cash out you have to wait MONTHS for a check. |

Sounds like a typical amateur poker experience to me.
The rake is just part of the game, it's a fact in any real poker game other than friendly house games (and even some house games will take a rake, although that's illegal in a lot of states). You aren't playing against the house so they don't get the bulk of the pot -- the rake is how they support their business, and I know at PokerStars the rake is a tiny percentage of each pot. And the major online poker sites -- I know PokerStars for sure, but probably FullTilt, BoDog, etc. -- are audited and validated by a 3rd party authority who has access to their poker algorithms. I don't think any of them would jeopardize their slice of a multi-billion dollar business to cheat, when they can make that money without cheating. We're talking gamblers here -- you don't have to cheat them, they just give you their money. If it gets out that you even *might* be a cheat, then the high-rolling gamblers will go elsewhere. As it is, these sites have TONS of veteran high-rollers after several years in the business, so it's probably safe to say they aren't rigged. Of course there have been a lot of smaller, shady poker sites that DO rip you off, which is why you want to stay with the reputable sites that have been mentioned.
If you're serious about playing poker, pick up some good books on the subject from authors like Harrington, Phil Gordon, and Slanksky & Malmuth. Gordon is an easy read for most people, while Slanksky & Malmuth are more analytical, math-oriented books. Any of them will describe the experience and assumption that you just mention as being typical of weak players, and will guide you on how to strengthen your game and develop a strategy for dealing with it. |

Once again DMorris, you took over and said everything I wanted to...
The same thing with the flush will happen at the casino, it isn't an uncommon thing, and the 10 high flush does not have to stay in... trust me
And so true on the books, good suggestions, i've read some of each of the authors you listed... Another good one is Lee Jones, i really liked his book I read. |

888 is no longer accepting US players you should know this by now. Even if they were I'd recommend poker stars or full tilt over them. Never tried Ultimate Bet, or BoDog but heard good things. Absolute Poker was caught cheating, at least 1 player had a universal account that could see everyones cards. So definitely stay away from them, and the smaller sites. |

My AM had stated that Pacific Poker was still accepting US players, and I recently earned commission on a US player. However, based on what I've read, it looks like that is no longer true. Thanks for the update.

it wouldn't surprise me that they may let US players in and make a deposit. Whenever that player goes to cash out though he probably isn't going to be able to when they require him to send in ID to verify his age.
So 888 still makes money, and you do, but the players only stand to lose.
Sad too because 888 was the best back in the day. |

yeah it really was but ever since the legislation there aren't anymore really good bets though. Most of the bonuses(which are far fewer) are sticky, with crazy WR and just not worth it. Also the payouts went down, where you used to get $200 per player at 888, which led to really large payouts from a site like CCU now they are much lower it seems. |

Well, I was just using the flush as an example. And I know shit like that will happen at a real casino, but it just seems that its MUCH more common in online poker. Idk, I never deposited over $100 at a time, so I would always play 5/10 blinds and it takes awhile to actually gain up alot of chips. One time I bought in for $50, turned that into like $140 but then lost it all.. |
