I will be in Long Island next week visiting my girlfriend. On Friday, I am taking her to see Regina Spektor at McCarren Park in Brooklyn, and we are staying at a Hilton in Newark Friday night. The concert is at 5pm Friday, so I'm thinking it will be over around 8-8:30. Afterward, I want to take her out to a nice dinner. I'm looking to spend no more than $100 on dinner, including tip. I would prefer a traditional restaurant, maybe a steak house of some sorts.
I know several of you are from the area, or have experience in this area, so any help is greatly appreciated.

My buddy just had to go to NYC to fix a refrigerated case for our work and if what he said is true, you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell in getting a steakhouse meal + tip for $75.
What is the Hilton costing you? That's got to be almost 5 bills, no? |

It's in Newark, NJ. It was $139 with taxes for the night. My girlfriend said Newark is about 20-30 minutes from Penn Station in Manhattan. I know it's a little out of the way, but I'd rather save the ~$200 for something else.
EDIT: I did ask my neighbor. They've never been to NYC, lol |

Last time I was in NYC, I had dinner at the Charlie Palmer restaurant in the top balcony area of Grand Central. I didn't have a time to go anywhere else, but it's a cool atmosphere especially if your girlfriend likes people watching.
I had a great steak there, which was probably around $30 or so. |

| I'd say $75 for a nice steak dinner for two in NYC is pretty unlikely unless you go to a common chain restaurant. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Around here the wife and I can pretty easily pay $50-$60 for a nice dinner, and that's not at an exclusive restaurant either. |

Yeah, I think I was being a little unrealistic. A nice dinner around here is $50-60 too.
Anything under $100 is fine, any suggestions now? |

It' hard to find a nice steak dinner for under $40 a person (pre-tax and tip).
However, I took a quick look at a website that lets you see a bunch of menus in NYC and found this:
http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=3851&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=61&home=Y
I've never been there but the reviews are pretty good. Check out the menu. If you just get a steak and a drink you can probably squeak by with $40 a person. Not too far from Penn station if you're going back to NJ. Maybe browse the site a bit and see if there's something better.
You can also go to a place that serves nice burgers. You would be able to go under $40/person that way. |

all you can eat steak. This is a famous restaurant too(the only other one that rivals it, in the US, is Porcao in Miami).
http://www.churrascariaplataforma.com/
(personal opinion/I eat a lot of steak)
EDIT: It'd be over $100, well worth it though. |

Looks like your typical Brazillian steakhouse (churrascaria), and I *love* them. My wife's not big on them because while she likes meat, it's not the highlight of her meal. Unlike myself.
We ate recently at Fogo de Chao in Atlanta for the wife's birthday. $50 per person, valet parking, and all the variety of beef, pork, lamb, and chicken you can eat. They make the rounds constantly bringing it to your table still sizzling on the skewers, and slice it off onto your plate. My mouth waters just thinking about it.
Not your traditional steak dinner though, with sides and whatnot. They bring a small supply of mashed potatoes and plantains, which they top off on request, but that's about it. Which is fine with me, I was there for the meat! They did have a fancy salad bar though. |
