i just called up and canceled AOL. the lady gave me some cancelation confirmation number or something, but I wasnt told where to use it.
also, once we were done, she said to please hold on to listen to some terms of service/legal blah blah type message, and she said bye.
well after she hung up, i stay on like she says and all i get is the dial tone and "booo beep booop, if you are trying to make a call, please hang up and try again" message.
anyone know what I'm supposed to do now? |

Half the time the legal shit plays, half the time it doesn't. Keep that confirmation number around for a few months, if AOL tries to bill you, call them and slap that in their face. (They'll credit you then.) Or you can just call back in a week or two and cancel the same account again, just to make sure. If they tell you it was already canceled, then the last rep actually did it, sometimes they put it more on a "Pending-Cancellation" status. AOL sucks |

Oh man... If you call them and tell then you have no job and cant pay for it... They will keep giving you 2 months free. I was down on my luck for awhile and couldnt pay my cable bill and had to resort to an AOL trial for awhile for internet... Which I hated... But anyways everytime I called and canceled they would give me 2 more months free and I got like a total of 8 months free from them... I hate calling them though cuz you can never understand them, and they always hastle you to stay signed up... Then once you finally get it cancel about a week later they start to blow up your phone and beg you to sign up again... AOL = |

Ancestry was the same way. Soon as I gave my account information they were just talking up a storm, and didn't let me get a word in. They just sent me FAQ emails on various parts of their site. Next time I called, they tried to do the same stuff but I just kept saying I've already tried that, when they'd start talking about something, and I think he finally just gave up and then canceled my account. Bet you they have the most persuasive people in their entire phone center on the cancellation line. |

| What about if you use an excuse like "I switched to Linux, AOL doesn't work for me now." or something like that, I haven't canceled yet but I think I am going to say that.. what do you guys think? |

The first time I canceled I told them that I just lost my job and couldn't afford to buy electricity or food. The lady tried to persuade me to use the AOL in a public library to look for a job, then proceeded to laugh at me when I tried to persuade her that my kids were hungry and i needed to canceled now. She laughed and complimented my call as being the funniest she's had that day. I told her that I would never laugh at her if her kids were hungry. -_- (keep in mind that my friend's laughter and techno could be heard in the background).
The second time i just kept it simple and told the guy that I stole my friend's credit card and he's going to press charges if I don't cancel. He hanged up on me and I called again and got his supervisor on the line. |

| Heh... I tried to tell them that my credit card was stolen and they tried to get me to switch cards and keep AOL. The ONLY reason I stayed on the phone was because the operator sounded hot. |
