Nice, congrats!

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but are you aware of the changes going on with DirecTV? I was a subscriber for over 5 years until this year when I got my HDTV. They're going MPEG4 this year and rolling out new receivers and PVR's, and they are NOT Tivo based. They're a "home-brew" custom DTV PVR and the reviews have not been all that flattering -- Tivo pretty much rules and this doesn't come close.

So you'll have to buy a new one within a year, most likely. Not only that, but as of March 1st they only lease new receivers, you can't buy them outright anymore. So you're about to invest a bunch of money in something that will be trashed within a year.

Just giving you a heads-up in case you want to change your mind. ;)

Oh, and not only that, but DirecTV's HDTV offering kinda stinks, especially for the price. I much prefer DTV service to Dish, but had to admit that Dish has DTV beaten severely in the HDTV programming market.

Actually, WRONG!
That is for people that own DTV TiVo boxes already so they can still have support for them. If they hadn't extended that agreement and you had an issue with a DTV TiVo they wouldn't have been able to help. DTV is no longer pushing the TiVo boxes, they are pushing their in-house crappy ones. You might still be able to buy the remaining TiVos they have but most people have to get them 3rd party. The HD TiVo is an awesome buy. My dad's cost $1000 and it was well worth it so at $300 its a bargain...

I wonder if this means they're delaying their MPEG4 rollout? Once everybody is MPEG4, they will turn off the MPEG2 stream and none of the old DirecTivo's will work anymore. I was told by my DTV rep that they hoped to have most areas covered with MPEG4 by the end of the year, so I expect 2 years tops out of DirecTivo if they keep that schedule. Of course if you can get 2 years on it, then it isn't bad I guess for $300...

I have three Series 2 SD DirecTivo's sitting here in a box in my office, waiting for me to get the time to put 'em up on eBay. )

isn't that what he bought, the DirecTV? It says DirecTV right on it.. that's why I said it was a waste of $300..

I do also see the TiVO logo, so I guess it is a real TiVO and not really a waste of $300... if it is a TiVO
