lol -- Fully Auto weapons have never been illegal -- you are talking about the "assault weapon ban" -- this had nothing to do with automatic weapons -- This only made the importing/making of magazines over 10 rounds illegal (if they were made before the ban you could buy all you wanted at any time) and it also made folding and collabsable stocks illegal ...

I love it.

fully auto rifles are allowed but seriously regulated...they have never been banned. The assault weapons ban only banned imported rifles with certain features, one of the most ridiculous being the banning of the importation of some rifles with a bayonet lug (presumably to stop the large amount of drive by bayonettings they were experiencing in places like communist CA and DC)

To be legal a rifle could come pretty close to its original configuration using a few US made parts. For example a 20 round mag banned because it was made in germany could be imported and you could change the spring, floorplate, and follower (less than $3.00 worth of parts), have 3 of your generally 6 needed US parts to classify it as US, and use it on the same rifle that it was banned on seconds ago. This was simpy a political move. A SKS, which many people think is full auto yet was never made that way, could still be imported and sold on the street unless it was Chinese. The sks could even retain the bayonet as long as it was Russian, German, Albanian, Romainian, Yugoslavian, etc...but if it was Chinese it was classified as an assault weapon by law. In almost all cases the SKS rifle was made in the exact same configuration. Since the ban expired the only real functional difference I can think of now is that rifles can have bayonet lugs and more original parts.

As far as why..........As long as Americans have their 2nd amendment rights we will never have to look up to a brick wall with people shooting at us from a guard tower because we got too close, Our government will never be able to run us over with tanks for expressing ourselves, we will always have the ability to defend our homes...even if the government looses control due to some unforseen large scale event. As long as we keep our rights any enemies that might contemplate invading us will not only have to battle our military but our entire civilian population..........
