My family told me to be careful ...
My friends told me it was a scam ...
My co-workers told me it was a waste of time ...

Then suddenly my TV ships ... and arrives at my house.

I cleaned up the entertainment center ... brought the old TV downstairs ... ripped into the box, and it seems to have been damaged in shipping!!! evil

The top right corner was a little dented and the styrofoam was broken in pieces. I figured it wasn't a big deal since it was free and it actually came, but when I turned on the TV the top right is all discolored!

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get this replaced without paying $100 to ship it somewhere?

Thanks. (

Sorry to hear about that. There were some a couple of other people too that had minor dents but wasn't as bad as yours sounds.

Call FedEx immediately. Explain to them. They'll probably reimburse the shipper, who will send you a new TV, possibly.

Check if the FedEx delivery had insurcance included, and contact the warehouse.

This would be a good thing to post about in the "Help Me" forum. Make sure to read the rules carefully first. From what I understand a number of wega's have arrived damaged, and although it is a huge pain in the butt, Gratis has been replacing all of them.

My Wega's been sitting over in my Dad's basement since the day it arrived two weeks ago since I don't have a place for it yet. The styrofoam was a little banged up as well.

I'd better check it tomorrow. But, you know, if it's damaged, I'll probably just throw the thing in the trash and forget about it. I didn't pay for it after all.

Question for other WEGA folks out there.

My WEGA seems to work fine, certainly wasn't damaged in shipping, but when I turn it on, it does take a good while before the image appears and usually when it initially appears it has a distinct reddish cast to that then fades away pretty quickly and then the image is perfect.

I figure its ok, but just thought I should check to see if this is normal operation or possibly an indication the TV may have an issue. Since Sony only warrants these things for 90 days labor I should probably find out sooner than later...

Thanks for any insight anyone can extend.

MapStuart, you should be fine. The process the Wega's go through while turning on is called 'Degaussing'. Monitor's (CRT) do it too. I have owned several Sony's and they have all degaussed before they showed anything. Mine haven't shown a red tint, but you're still probably safe. Congrats on the TV man.

Thanks SilentInfiniti.

However, it isn't anything like a degaussing of a CRT as far as I can tell. It turns on and I can hear the degaussing occur, then just remains black for about 10 seconds or more (all the while the little red light by the power button is blinking). After that 10 or 11 seconds of darkness the image slowly fades in with an initial severe red tinge that then fades to normal in about 3 or 4 seconds.

Normal?

Oh, and thanks for the congrats! I've had it for about 3 weeks or so now and am thoroughly enjoying it! Gratis rocks!

Hey again MS,
I just turned on my free Wega, and there is a bit of time between the degaussing and the actual picture coming on, but for me it's only 5-6 seconds. If I had to venture a guess and give my honest opinion, I would say you should definitely be OK. Maybe you should call Sony just to be on the safe side?

Here is the number just in case.

800-222-SONY (800-222-7669)

Take it easy man.

ligaspli It's fraud! Watch out. Meaning that Best Buy finds it defective sends it back to Sony and they get it back just like they would of anyway.

If it's shipping damage then FedEx or UPS will pick up the bill (assuming it was insured.. if it wasn't someone screwed up and you'll end up taking in the butt). Overall shipping CRT's of any kind is a nightmare and should be avoided. Get a LCD product and save yourself a headache and some heavy lifting. )

Not exactly, you do realize that the serial numbers are on the box AND on the TV.. if the Best Buy employee checks this, which we always do at the one I work at, you will not only be discovered for the liar you are but you'll look like a complete idiot.

They'll pick up the bill and pay the shipper.. assuming the shipper will take the time to deal with the problem, as the recieving end, there isn't much else you can do except initiate the claim by notifying them of the damage.

Good tip on getting the LCD though.. but i'm still going to order the WEGA and take my chances. )
