related question...keep in mind the last console I played was Nintendo (as in 8-bit)
is this version the best PS2 to have?
ie would I be better off exchanging this one for a "version X.X with roxers haxchip 3.14" (or some such crap (I just made that stuff up)) if I all I want to do it play GT4?

Newest slim PS2 has the best graphics chip, even better than the standard PS2 (wide bodied). My recommendation is to get XBox and get Forza Motorsport. I personally own GT4 and PS2 (the old one) and LOVE it, but I heard Forza Motorsport blows it off the track (I read an article in Car and Driver). I'm waiting for my 3/14 XBox from FGS, still Processing.

Got my PS2 as well. Was waiting for me today when I got home. I still however say backordered on my list and when the CSR wrote me saying they were backordered as well as the DS and XBOX my PS2 was already in transit. Hmmm. Gonna write them and let them know I got it.
