Alright, so my computer just randomly locks up...but not completely.

I'll be doing something and all of a sudden that application freezes, then if I try to click another application that's open, that freezes. Let's also say that I have iTunes open playing music...it will continue to play unless i try to minimize that program or close it. My mouse can move. If I open up task manager from the tray, and try to kill explorer.exe, it doesn't work. Then the screen turns white a transparent white and I can only move my mouse. The only way to get it off is to do a hard reset. It keeps happening. I was just talking to someone on AIM, and I opened My Computer to browse a folder, and then that just randomly froze, and everything else started freezing.

Not quite sure what's going on here...

At night I'll lock my computer, and then when I wake up I'll open the lid, and sometimes I can get back in...other times the screen won't wake up, or when I type my password in it just locks up.

Sometimes when I install something it happens during installation too.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

Thanks.

Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
3 GB RAM
2.2GHz Core 2 Duo
nvidia 9500M GS.

I presume you've run several different spyware/adware/virus scans, and those programs have not found any problems?

Yeah.

Do you think my hard drive could be loose inside of the laptop?

run some memory scans? Perhaps your ram is malfunctioning.

Hahah. No. It's in perfect condition.

Yeah, sounds like RAM to me (I had a similar problem before). As manOFice said, memtest is good. It's a simple utility you can run on startup which will check your RAM.

Don't think so...

Fuck. I ran CHKDSK...and I left it on while I went out to eat with my friends...started it around 6 ... now it's 8...and it was stuck at 20% stage 5 of 5, checking free space. The hard drive light wasn't lit up anymore like it was for the other steps.

What should I do?

Also note that windows was not started...it was told to do chkdsk after a restart.
