Hey D, you gotta be sick of me by now! D
I let me new PC sit to long without virus protection or spyware protection, and of course you guessed it, I'm infected!!
I get the pop-up of the mock Windows Security alert, your computer is infected!
It is the SPYWARE CYBERLOG-X, pop up.
Now I used the trial of AVG, avast, spybot, and a couple others in SAFE mode
all cleaned up what ever they could find. I boot back into normal, and still get the popup.
I was able to regain access to my task manager, and everything else, but still get that popup
2 small things on the side, I'm missing lynaymqs.dll (the pc tells me everytime I boot up), and every windows start I get
"Windows must restart for upgrades to complete"
I just installed SP3 on my XP pro, I do have Vista on separate partition.
I read something about disabling windows restore???

Norton absolutely sucks. Stay away. One of the worst AV products ever made. I've repaired more PC's by [ib63c1f406e]removing[/ib63c1f406e] Norton AV than I can count.
Often an automated removal tool won't work for serious infections. It has to be manually cleaned up. You have to be very PC literate and know your way around process lists and system registry keys. If you aren't up to the task, just format & reinstall.
The steps you would take to manually clean
1. Boot into Safe Mode, login to a local admin account
2. Disable System Restore
3. Try running your AV, anti-spyware, etc. tools from here to try to cleanup again.
4. If no luck, run Hijack This and save a logfile. Be very careful because Hijack This will let you kill not only malware but legit system files and setting also -- you can totally nuke your system with it. If you can't figure out the malware process and/or registry keys from the log, you can post your log to the Hijack This forum and people there can analyze it and possibly point out what you need to manually clean.
5a. If successful, re-enable System Restore.
5b. If unsuccessful, then either take it to someone experienced in malware cleanup, or just nuke & pave (format and reinstall the OS).
I've yet to meet an infection that I couldn't clean manually, but I've had some serious infestations that took longer to clean than a format/reinstall would take, so sometimes that's the easier way to go.

I've heard this before (including a couple of times from you), but I've always used Norton and have never had a virus (6+ years). And it's not just that I'm naive and don't notice them (I regularly run scans with multiple scanners and HijackThis). I'm not doubting that you are right, just wondering what exactly is wrong with it?
I'll agree that Norton 360 and Norton Systemworks are incredibly bloated and mostly useless, but the Internet Security package seems to work fine (though it is a bit bloated as well).

The problem with Norton AV is not with an inability to catch virii, in fact it usually rates pretty highly in that regard. The problem is it's a buggy and bloated resource hog. I understand the latest versions have improved, but after too many years of "fixing" people's PC's by removing Norton and installing AVG (and seeing their surprise at the increase in system performance), I'll likely never trust them again. They also tend to interfere with a lot of other products. After years and years of running the free AVG versions, I've had exactly one conflict with an application (a game actually), and it was promptly patched to fix the problem.
Their corporate Symantec AV is not as bad.

For a paid solution, that would be my suggestion as well.
For free, you can't beat AVG Free IMO. However Avast! also has a free version which is pretty popular too. There's another free one that has a following, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Thanks everyone, I'm pretty PC literate and can follow instructions very well, SO I'll get cracking on this and keep you posted! I have no problem reformating, but want to attempt the task at hand. I'll safe mode it then run my arsenol of software, AVG free, smitfraud, avast, spybot. ALL SEPARATELY of course, one at a time!!!

Well that was easy!!! Went in to safe mode, turned off restore, ran everything like I did before. Presto, this morning I am pop-up and virus free!!!! Thanks D. the disabling restore is a new one to me that I will have to keep in my arsenal!

Although I have used AVG for quite a long time, the new AVG 8.0 really sucked. It had a utility that scanned every link to make sure the site it linked to was "safe." This really slowed down internet browsing, so I will probably be switching to Avast.

Avast did thebest job in this situation, I ran spybot, AVG, and then Avast.
Avast did most of the cleaning! It's scan prior to boot feature is probably what did the trick.
