Okay so my laptop speakers were working fine. One day I took my headphones out of my laptop, and no sound would be emitted from my laptop speakers. I kept plugging the jack in and out from my headphones, still no sound; however, sound would work perfectly fine with the headphones plugged in.

Now, every time I reboot my computer, no sound comes out of my laptop speakers, but it works with headphones plugged in. My laptop no longer notifies me when I plug my headphones in or when I take them out.

When there are no headphones plugged in, and I set the volume to 0, and then I set it up from 0, the sound works out of my speakers again. I opened Realtek's sound manager thing, and it thinks there are headphones plugged in when there aren't.

What do I do?

Well the only thing I know that I could try doing virtually is to try uninstall the driver and install it again... If that doesn't work, it's a hardware problem..

Seems to me that you have been having a problem with your laptop lately... Time to do a DIY for laptop?

If it was a hardware problem then the speakers wouldn't work at all. Both the headphones and the speakers DO work...just in order for the speakers to work i have to lower the volume all the way and then raise...but the computer thinks headphones are plugged in.

and no DIY, this laptop costed me $2,300 last July. ;)

I was just talking to tech support online and I actually got a normal person who speaks fluent English. He told me to reinstall new drivers, hopefully that works. But he said i should send it in for repair ASAP so i will send it in when i'm done with school in May.

Are you going to take people's advice or should I just lock this now?

For a $2300 laptop, you don't seem to give a shit about doing what everyone tells you, and just sending it in.

I wonder if they offer any kind of service where they will fix it for you, and all you have to do is send it in. You should look into that FOAF

Now I'm really freaked out. Since the new driver apparently killed the speakers altogether, I just did a system restore to yesterday, and now the volume down+up thing makes the speakers work again. Do you think I should do a system restore back to when there was on problem?

Also >>>> http//forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-171332.html

Also if you read there...someone mentioned testing the speakers on Ubuntu...and unplugging/plugging in headphones, and both worked flawlessly. So could this possibly be just a software problem?

Apparently this problem occurs with a lot of laptops and Macs...

In the meantime, can anyone find out for FOAF if the manufacturer offers any kind of service, where you can send it in and they will fix it? I'm pretty sure they do, but nobody here or with the company has offered it to him.

They do. They pay for shipping and everything too...it usually takes about a week.

My serial number sticker on the bottom is a little worn off so some of the serial number is missing, though ASUS tech support said that it's also underneath the battery. It's got a two years warranty on it.
