[b4c8efdbd48]Problem solved...my boys actually went to their computer class and asked for a monitor that the school didn't want any more, and came back with an entire computer!!! I'd have never thought to do that, but they did...think they love me!! LOL

It def is a issue with the monitor, as this one works fine!!!

Thank you all so much D D D D D [/b4c8efdbd48][/size4c8efdbd48][/color4c8efdbd48]

Hey guys... got another problem ;)

My screen is flashing off and on. Have been able to get it to stop by turning it off for 30 seconds, but now nothing is working. It was not a constant thing, but would happen when one of my kids would pull a game up, such as Ages of Empires. Now happens with many games... well now it happened with a game and wont stop...proof reading this was a real $itch (

Anything I can do?

Thanks guys you are always so great!

Margot ;)

Have you tried rebooting your system and uninstalling the game the reinstalling it ?

I was going to try that, but then it began to happen with other games as well...

I've had the first game it did it with for quite some time, along with the others. It seemed it was only about a weeks time of playing the game off and on, and it started happening with others. This lead me to believe that it wasn't the specific game causing it.

Would doing that with the first game that it occurred with possibly take care of the problem if it has spread to others? Really has me confused. Not to mention going blind here...lol.

the same thing is happening to my monitor (the 24" dell i received from i-deal).

is your monitor still getting power, are your light still on?
when your monitor flashes on, can you see your desktop?

if your monitor is an LCD, have you tried both the regular and DVI cables?

from the research i've done, i think the problem is something called a [bc09a57da56]backlight inverter[/bc09a57da56]. there are a lot of hits if you google it.

the solutions look pretty complicated.

Replacing the backlight inverter is pretty straightforward for laptops, though I admit I've never replaced one in a monitor.

Dray, is your monitor still under warranty perhaps?

DRay9911

i have read about a 3-year replacement warranty but since i-deal purchased it and i didn't keep any of the paperwork when i received it, i don't have any information which dell would need to help me out. i've called dell a few times and get so frustrated with their customer service

i've tried e-mailing, faxing and leaving a message on i-deal's customer service number but have not received a response.

Ouch...

Yes, I can see the desk top, and am using the monitor right now...no choice. It flashes on for about one second and then off for the same amount of time. This morning when I turned it on, the flashes were so fast I couldn't make anything out, but rebooted and now it is flashing just enough for me to see or read a few words at a time. The LED light goes out when the monitor displays and comes on when the screen goes black.

Is it possible that my video card is going out? Or that the video card driver is faulty/corrupted? It's about 4 years old...the pc and monitor (compaq FP 5315 LCD flat panal).

My eyes are about to pop out of my skull shock

Be gentle...I don't speak computereese as well as you all do...LOL

Thanks guys,

Margot ;)

Correction...right now it is coming on for 1 second, and then going out for about 2.5.

it could be a virus
dose shaking you mouse of hiting a key make it come back on ?

no im not Nuts
windows has a power save funcion in it that will turn your monitor off
if you don't do anything (normally set to 15-30 min)
a virus could be setup to activate that thing after just a few seconds

I know you aren't nutz...lol I have heard of that, and no it's not like that at all...it is just a continues off and on. I changed out the cords, and made sure all the connections were secure. The only improvement I got was that as soon as I plugged the new cord in, it stayed on for 4 seconds instead of the 1 that it is doing now. I quickly went back to the 1 sec flash...within about 30 seconds or so. I tried unplugging it and plugging it in about 5 times...it was not a constant thing in which the flash was slow at the beginning, but did occur 3 times. Hitting any keys or moving the mouse has no effect...I am typing with the screen flashing of and on. It's the reading and clicking that is killing me!

Wouldn't XP have a default driver for the monitor? If so, would it be safe for me to uninstall the driver (hope I am saying that right...the information from the CD that came with the monitor) and then download a updated driver from the web? Or even if I uninstalled the CD info for the monitor, I could see if the monitor then worked on the default couldn't I? Hope I am not showing too much ignorance here...

If you guys know of a safe way for me to do this, and or think it might be a good idea to at least try...would you mind giving me step by step I'm not too bad with all of this, but don't want to make a dumb mistake.

Thanks again!

;)

amartin99

yea I think windows has several default drivers for dif types of monitors
I have installed XP many times
but never bother to install my monitors drivers and it always works just fine

but I would sagest downloading a new driver for your monitor then just updating your drivers on your computer

also if your TV is new enough it my have an option to connect it to your computer like a monitor
I used to have a 44 plasma that I often connected to my computer

if you can I would connect your TV to it and see if it is doing the same thing

hmmm
when your computer is booting up (mine takes the better part of a minute)
will the monitor do this flashing thing during boot up ?
if it is a problem with your drivers then it should not do it during boot up
I have had several display problems over the years
and they always had affect once windows got running
not during boot up
if it happens during boot up then it is likely a physical problem
but that could also be your video card (adaptor)

Before messing with the monitor drivers, have you changed drivers for your video card just to see?

This goes along with what amartin is saying, but when you turn on your PC, press DEL (or another key that enters your BIOS setup). This will allow you to let your PC sit a while in the BIOS setup screen without booting XP. Do you still have the same problem? If so, it must be a hardware issue (sounds like dray has it right).

You're probably better off buying a new one rather than fixing an old 15" LCD though.

Hello,

I do apologize...if a moderator would like to move this, please do. It was the first thing I could find to click on, and was hoping for help from all of the great understanding guys out here that know so much about this.

Thanks for everything...I followed the advice, and yes, it flashes while booting, and during bios. So, before I completely throw this out the window, anything else I might try? Dray is right about this being far too complicated...especially on an older monitor, as you stated HEHEHEHE.

You have been great!

Hey Margot,
Do you have access to another monitor?? I'm extremely computer illiterate...but I have a 17" HP LCD monitor and it's been replaced 3 times (thank God for warranties). Anyways, one of the time it got replaced, that's exactly what it was doing, flashing on and off. Drove me freakin crazy, but HP ended up replacing it when it eventually stopped flashing and just wouldn't come on anymore. I would say, if you have a spare monitor, or even can borrow one for a couple minutes, try that and see if the issue is the monitor itself rather than any software or driver problems?? That's just my computer illiterate advice though!! The best of luck, I know how frustrating that can be!!

amartin99

24-02-2008 12:19:44

sounds to me like you knead a monitor

ironicly I have a spare here
but it is doing nearly the same thing as yours
but this monitor im referring to had a built in shut off for if you don't use it for a while
and it's timer is messed up
would just go on power save mode randomly
all i had to do was move my mouse and it would turn back on
then it get really bad and was shutting off every few seconds
now I have a new computer with a NEW plasma monitor
so the old one is spare
but you wouldn't want it hehehe

Thanks sweetie, it's great advice, but I don't have a spare, nor one to readily borrow...I am hoping a lady down the road can get one for me to use for a few mins too make extra sure that it is the monitor, but that will not likely happen. So you know what a headache I have right now...litereally! Glad you got your situation resolved...mine is out as far as the warranty goes.

Was really hoping it was the video card since it only occured when very high res games were pulled up, but seems that isn't the case.

You are right Martin...LOL. But on another ironic note, I had that same problem with this very monitor a few years back anc corrected it. Took me a bit, but got it done. I don't for the life of me remember how I did it, or would pass that along to you.

Sorry for the typo's, my eyes are just not functioning well enough to proof read all of this! LOL

one more thing you could try (probably a waste of time)
but unplug the monitor from the computer
and plug it back in again
wont likely make any difference but you never know

also there is a small adapter you can get
that should let you use a normal TV as a monitor
probably just $5-10

or just go to a used electronics store and grab an old monitor
will be a piece of junk by modern standards but should get you back going ok
and likely be very cheap

If you do end up having to replace it, you can usually find decent priced CRTs on Craigslist. A lot of people are upgrading to LCD, and are just happy to get a couple bucks for the CRT.

Margot530

24-02-2008 15:05:29

Thanks for those ideas CG and Martin...I'll check into them. Oh, I did unplg it from the PC, cleaned it and reattached it...didn't work. But using a Flat screen TV...oh, my 52 inch would be awesome! LOL My family would kill me, but perhaps another until I get a new one...

if you can conect it to your 52TV
even if just for a few min as a test
that would confirm if it is the monitor or something elce

I'd have to get the adapter. wanted to get it with the capacity built in, but the one I wanted didn't have it. Glad to know there is such a thing...will be a few days before I can get into town and do it, but I will let you all know. The other TV's, same thing... But it is a great idea to verify the problem Martin, thanks!

I got the new 44Plasma just after that and didn't put any more thought to it

not to descurage you though
just that you should make sure your getting the rite thing before buying it
somone at the store will likly know what is kneaded

I don't know if it was mentioned but do you have another computer monitor to test with... not a tv or anything but like a little lcd or crt?

If the other monitor doesn't work you know it's the mobo if you have built in video or if it does work you know its the original monitor

Thank you MO, yes it was my first thought...but don't have one new enough to use, nor one to borrow. Wish I did...but if I had a monitor that I could use to check it with and it worked...I wouldn't be sitting here looking at a flashing screen, I'd use it until I could get a better one LOL

What a pain in the eyes! shock

Thanks Martin, I will check that out.

Oh, and just to let everyone know...the problem is getting worse, so may be off line for awhile...doing what I can here!

Thanks for all your help everyone.

It sounds like it could also be your video card. Do you know what type you have in there? That might only be the thing that needs replacing. If your a heavy gamer, this would make your games look MUCH better and if not, well it wouldnt cost much at all for a pretty cheap one.
