I'm just looking for a program to play my vast collection of music on my computer easily. I like the lay out of winamp and all, but i hate how i can't manage my songs (pause..play etc) from the bottom hand right corner of my desktop.

I've heard good things from foobar2000, but it looks fairly plain, any ideas?

There are WinAMP plugins that provide a taskbar or tasktray interface to WinAMP. Such as

http//www.winamp.com/plugins/details/82271

I've always preferred WinAMP on Windows for general media playback, in fact I bought WinAMP5 Pro several years ago just to support the developers and get the few extras you get for paying.

Amarok for Windows is almost a reality, so when it's a bit closer to done, I may be switching.

Doh i feel pretty stupid because i installed foobar2000 but i couldn't managed to replace the right components and get the skin to be functional haha. As for the winamp plugin dmorris, i find that a lot of them i've been looking for (placing stop pause next in the system tray) are all outdated and aren't compatible with the most recent version of winamp...or it may just be me.Oh yea, this includes the one you posted.

EDIT amarok looks amazing, what a shame it isn't on windows yet.

Lately, I've been using Winamp 5 with the MMD3 skin in vertical windowshade mode. I used to have it in horizontal shade, but it doesn't work with my current desktop setup. It's small enough to put away in the corner, but access the play controls quickly. But then again, I use 1920x1200 res.

I also have the pause/play, stop, and next/previous functions tied to my media keyboard's buttons.

I use Foobar and it did take a little bit of messing around with it to get it work the way I wanted it to, but once you do it it's easy to do again if need be. It's the slickest media player I've used, and it's free, and a lot more customisable than most players.

Plus, it only took about 15 seconds to add all 14k+ songs to its library whereas Winamp would take about 5 minutes and crash half way through.

Here's what mine looks like

That's what Amarok looks like. There are other skins for it but I'm fine with this one. The menus and the playlist builder is absolutely awesome. That little preview thing is what happns when you click on a song or it changes to a new one. The context menu is full of cool stuff like "Favorite Tracks by [Artist]" and etc. Notice the lyrics tab and the artist tab. You can easily get the lyrics by simply clicking that tab and the artist tab shows you the artist's wikipedia entry.

Also, it automatically has last.fm scrobbling built in, last.fm radio, and other misc internet radio. Plus it works flawlessly with my iPod. It seems like it loads songs on to my iPod even faster than iTunes but I may just be crazy. P

When I left Vista, I was kind of concerned about not being able to use iTunes anymore but with this, I don't want iTunes at all.

It's explained in the link I gave earlier. Click on "FofR Configuration Guide" on the right side.

Kind of a lolworthy title name but yeah, not about a hooker with a penis. It's pretty easy to tell what this song is about when you read the lyrics. Normally Tool's lyrics are more complex and have different interpretations.

Btw, those lyrics are supposedly a response to some kid that approached them after they released Undertow accusing them of selling out.

And if I may be so bold, J4, your Amarok setup is mighty sexi.

Is it the same one that's on Salival? If so, yes. Dammit! Thanks for reminding me. I keep forgetting to convert my FLAC version of that album to MP3 so it shows up in my library. Time to give 'er a listen.

J4320

10-02-2008 22:43:43

Nah it's a different version. It's a recording from "Wings Stadium" --

"Remaster at Darksound Studios (www.darksoundstudios.com) using various programs and plug-ins to make this rare sound board show sound as close to professional as possible. The tracks were eq'd, compressed, harmonics adjusted, stereo field enchanced, loudness maximized, dynamics created, and more. This is the true Tool live show even better than Salival due to it being one complete show. Also the best part is a cover of Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" in perfect board quality. This is a true gem for all Tool fans enjoy the remaster."

I found it on Waffles. I have to say, the quality is absolutely amazing. It has the best live version of Sober I've ever heard. But yeah, I have Pushit from Salival and Pushit from this and they both seem to have their own feel to them. I haven't really given either a complete listen so I don't want to judge on which one is better.

Bookmarked it? Are you trying to take it easy on your ratio or something?

ajasax

11-02-2008 09:59:40

For some reason it's harder to seed on Waffles than What. I also tend to download FLAC versions wink I've also only downloaded 1 torrent from Waffles. I'll try to upload some of my own torrents.

Btw, I added you on Waffles

J4320

11-02-2008 11:08:40

You did? My friends list is still empty. How did you find me? lol

Oh and my ratio is terrible (.26) but it doesn't really matter at all until you download 5GB. Then it kind of matters, but still not too much. I just leave my Bittorrent running all night and it eventually gets some uploads in there.

And lastly, do you not use an iPod? I'd love to use FLAC as well but it's not compatible with the iPod so I tend to avoid downloading FLAC files.

dmorris68

11-02-2008 11:29:47

I prefer FLAC for lossless PC playback, but convert to Apple Lossless for my 80GB iPod. That's why I prefer the large-HDD iPods over the flash-based Nanos and Touches.

ajasax

11-02-2008 11:43:42

Actually, I keep all of my FLAC albums in a backup folder, then copy and compress to MP3 in a separate Music partition for Winamp and my iPod.

And I found you on Waffles thru the Tool torrent page. I checked your snatched torrents and saw Hurt.
