So I got the dreaded 3 red lights last night. I have the extended warranty stuff, so I call them up, talked to someone in India, and have my shipping materials on the way. Any chance they'll replace my old premium w/ an hdmi capable model???? Just wondered if they actually fix the box and send it back or if they send a refurb, and then work on my box later for someone else?

When I sent mine in, I put a little note asking if they could give me an hdmi model if mine couldn't be fixed, but they fixed it. They did it quick, I watched the tracking and it got there on wednesday and they sent it back to me on Friday. From what I was told, they are supposed to try and fix yours first, and if it is unfixable, they are supposed to send a brand new one, not a refurb.

My core RRoD'ed the other day too. I wouldn't expect to receive a different model than what you paid for. They're spending enough money just so that the warranty is 3 years not 1 year for all the first gen 360s, what more can you ask for? You should be grateful MS is even doing anything like this to begin with.

So we should be grateful to have bought a POS console that breaks on many of us?
They're not giving us that warranty as a special favor. They had to provide it, at least for the image of the console (which sucks outside of NA), and they probably wanted to prevent people from calling for a recall.

That's besides the point. MS could've acted like Toshiba and stop supporting the 360 (yes that was a jab at HD DVD)
The original point I was getting at though is, don't expect something for nothing. IMO, the topic creator sounded a little greedy.

I could say something along those lines for Windows ME. MS has always had the rep of delivering products with issues, the 360 is no different. jeez way to turn a small comment around on me @_@

If you can't take someone critiquing what you say, stay out of a debate.
So MS has a history of delivering shoddy products, that means we should be thankful they do something to make it right? It should be expected.

Wasn't a debate to begin with. ANYWAY, I don't think you will get a new 360 with an HDMI port, but you may get lucky although my friend just got back his and he said it was the same model, just a different serial number.

I had this problem, I panicked and tried to call MS Xbox then found out that it will take awhile.... like 3months long
then I realized I still had the receipt from best buy and my warranty was still good so I brought it there and replaced it with brand new ones along with two games no questions asked ) so if your warranty from the store you bought it from then you can do that if not then youll have to wait for a long time
I suggest you keep your Case number for future referrences gl!

Wow! 3 months? It took a total of 15 days from the day I called them to the day I got it back working. Maybe they were backed up?
I got my exact system back. I wrote the serial number down and it also had this one big scratch I looked for when I got it back. I suppose they could have switched the guts out with a refurb though.
The guy at support I talked to told me that they are supposed to try to fix your system first, and if it is unfixable they are supposed to send you a brand new system not someone elses refurb. If they sent me a refurb, I would be pissed and raise hell until they sent me a new one.

I just recently got 2 rings (if you stand it upright, it's the top 2). I did some research online and it seems as though it's just an overheating issue. I had it on its side instead of upright but that is going to change.
There was a lot of dust in it too. Should I call MS even though it just seems like an overheating issue? Again, it's only the 2 rings.
Thanks.
Oh, and I got it from freepay in sept 06, so i should still be able to get it replaced/fixed for free.

You can only get it fixed for free if you get the three rings (3 yr warranty for 3rlod, 1 yr for everything else I think). Just keep trying until you get the 3rlod, once you're at the overheating stage it shouldn't be too hard lol.

everyone i know with an Xbox 360 has had the red rings of death. in fact my brother had a red screen of death. just red on the whole screen. it seems to me microsoft needed to do some more testing before they banged out this product because now the PS3 is going to bury them, especially with the death of the HD DVD and PS3 running blue ray???
PS3 is going to take this one over.
oh but don't worry, the xbox has halo.

How many people do you know that bought a 360 (or a PS3 for that matter) to watch movies on? I really doubt that the death of HD-DVD will effect 360 sales very much if at all.
It's all about the games, and right now 360 has more good exclusives than PS3.
And I just thought I would add that I like to be able to play ALL the good games. I own 360 and Wii and PS3 is on it's way, so I am NOT a Microsoft fanboy. If anything, I like Nintendo the best, for nostalgic reasons.

Yeah the HD-DVD was a $150 add on. It will have nothing to do with the sales of the xbox because it will always be the better seller than the sony consoles. Hell, the only reason that I would buy a PS3 is for the Blu-ray and maybe a few games....
360 FTW!

Had some more issues with the overheating. I bought a Pelican Cooling fan and the reviews said that should help it a ton.
I decided to stay away from the intercooler cause some of the reviews said that it would melt right on your xbox.

With the recent European price drop, sales have gone up 36% in the UK.
http//www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9615&Itemid=2
We have yet to receive our price drop but it is expected by analysts to happen fairly soon. (Possibly next month to coincide with the GTA 4 launch? Its possible seeing as the Canadian price drop was last month and the European price drop was this month. Also, they could tout the fact that GTA 4 Episodic Content will be coming to Xbox 360 exclusively and announce the price drops at the same time. Who knows... It would be a good strategy.)
http//www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkpVkEEFZEnhLfDBih.php
Then there is 8bitjoystick claiming that it is '100% confirmed' that the 20 GB will upgrade to 60 GB.
http//www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkpVZZZFyVksnhxOcn.php
Regardless with what happens, I'm sure Microsoft has their plans to keep the 360 on the top.

The price dropped in UK because it needed to, it was too high with the pressure of the dollar weakening.
The 2RROD problem is not covered under the new 3 yr warranty, so if the console is older then a year too bad. Of course some people have 'induced' 3RROD into their failing consoles, but that is fraudulent.

Yeah, I got the ring of death a while back. I read some fourms online and my friend told me that all you have to do it wrap it in two towels and then turn it on. Then it overheats and resets itself. It works GREAT now, good as new, no problems and its been 3 months now. If you want you could try this, but make sure you are present, because it could cause a house fire...

That is not true, only a couple of errors of 3RROD are caused by overheating at least directly. What it is caused by is a warp in the motherboard that places more pressure to the already very fragile solder points in the BGA Matrix. The BGA was not 'cooked' on properly when it was first manufactured and was manufactured with cheap solder and shoddy solder balls. This is the reason why the new falcon boards don't have as many 3RROD.
The 'towel trick' works, but usually for only a couple of hours. What it does is it heats up the solder to around its melting point and makes contact again, that is why it has to get REALLY REALLY HOT to work. Of course heating it up this high is bad for other things, but really the fail rate of the GPU and CPU and causing permenant damage is high, but it DEFINITELY could happen.

Zach ---
My 360 was getting disc reading errors like mad crazy to the point where I had to spend 15 minutes restarting it over and over to get it to work. I called up M$ and they told me, "Sorry, only 3 red rings bla bla bla."
I sat there disappointed for a few minutes then I decided to just say I got the 3 red rings. So I call them up again and I said that it got the 3 red rings and it's been having trouble reading the disc. They sent me the box, I sent it back, they fixed it, I was happy. Wuuuuhla. Working 360. Don't worry about trying to overheat it, just do what I did.
;)
I don't feel bad about it either because that 360 was a crappy refurb with scratches on it that they sent me after my first one broke.
zr2152
13-04-2008 00:01:53
Yeah well they told me that they would do tests to see if there was really 3 rings or not and if it was not 3 rings, they would charge me 100 to fix it etc...
So i just decided to not deal with it.
So should I call them back and tell them that I have 3 rings then?
J4320
13-04-2008 00:13:07
Well what I did was I said that I got the 3 red rings before but I'm also having big problems with the 360 reading the disc. This Indian guy said not to worry about it and that they'd fix it.
