I'm looking at getting a GPS unit. It will be primarily in the car, but I'd also like to be able to take it if I go camping or if I decide to try Geocaching. What do you guys recommend? I see there are handheld models, as well as portable car models (what's the difference?). Which model(s) should I consider?

I got a Garmin nuvi 200. It's their cheapest model, but it definitely works, and you can do car/bike/pedestrian.

Ah nice, I was looking at the Garmin nuvi 200W. I ended up grabbing the TomTom GO 720 this evening... love it so far.

It really depends on what your budget is. There are great models in every price range. Best thing you can do is set your price range right off the bat... then make a list of features you Need and features you Want. Find all the models that have at least all the features you Need and if some have features you Want too, then that's a bonus.

Update, in case anyone else is looking for a GPS in the future.

Still absolutely love my TomTom. I'm looking for a way to mount it in my car (2007 Aveo). It came with a suction cup mount, but I'd rather mount it lower, to the right of the radio. ProClip offers a solution that will do it, but I'd end up paying $100+ for the parts from them.

High five! You own a Malibu too? I drive the Aveo, and my wife drives the Malibu.

The dash on the Aveo is just slightly curved, so the suction cup won't stay too long.

Works perfect on the malibu but I can see what you're saying for the aveo dash

Yeah... actually just looked on ProClip again, and I could get the 2 pieces I need for about $65. I could either put it just to the right of the steering wheel (left of radio), or to the right of the radio. I'll probably do the latter, so my wife can get to it while I'm driving if need be.

Someone else suggested I mount the smooth disc with the foam backing on the dash, and suction to that... but I hate the idea of sticking something like that to my dash. Way too permanent for my liking.
