I recently reformatted my wife's HDD and started her off from scratch (as opposed to restoring a backup) and everything went fine besides uTorrent.

Well, it installed correctly, but then all of her torrent files (in Application Data) disappeared. She downloaded something else to see if ti worked still but then when clicking on the shortcut for uTorrent it's target was no longer there. The Windows "searching for target" or whatever it says came up and started searching the computer for the utorrent.exe.

After it not finding it I noticed that there's no longer an installation directory in Program Files, but the App Data folder is still there with data files in it. So I checked to see if it could be uninstalled but it doesn't show in Add/Remove Programs.

I cleaned the registry, junk files, emptied the Recycle Bin, deleted everything related to uTorrent, restarted and then downloaded uTorrent 1.6.1. As soon as I clicked on the installer it opened uTorrent as if I was just clicking on a shortcut and still had the one torrent she had downloaded on the list. All the preferences were the same and it didn't even take me through the installation prompts.

I've cleaned up the PC and removed anything related to uTorrent, but every time I download the installer again and click on it, it's as if it still installed, even though there's nothing related to uTorrent (other than the installer) anywhere on the computer.

I'm fucking clueless, so anyone have any ideas?

Have you tried using a different torrent program to see if you encounter the same problem?

Maybe you downloaded the standalone version of uTorrent the second time (doesn't need installation)? Just copy the new version of utorrent.exe into C\Program Files\uTorrent (create new folder), and create a shortcut to it on the desktop -- or choose to start it at logon in options.

The standalone version is probably better anyways since it won't mess with your .torrenturl==http://=http:///url files, settings, etc.

Isn't there a version of utorrent that calls home, or reports to someone what is being torrented? If so, I presume that it's not 1.6.1? Also, when I used it for live music, I had to create a shortcut from the exe, as there's no actual program to install, are you sure you deleted the exe?

I guess that's what I downloaded then. I got it from the uTorrent forum, so..... shrug

THanks for the help though guys, appreciate it.

Yeah I think it's every version from 1.7 up and I believe 1.6.1 was the last version to not do this.

well, i know that standard prefrences on Utorrent Store the data in there own folder, and they seed but also it may happen if Utorrent shuts down immediatly you lose all data...
