Newegg was having some Black Friday deals...and I needed an external hard drive. I was leaning towards a Seagate FreeAgent Pro, until I realized it's cheaper to build my own, and I wanted eSATA. If I bought premade one, I would've had to buy an eSATA cable. So, I found a hard drive and an enclosure to suit my needs. The Seagate external was $158 itself before taxes and shipping. I got the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 | 500 GB/7200 RPM/32MB Cache for $109 because I got a $15 off coupon code from Newegg from an email they sent me, and it had free shipping. I also got a great external enclosure. The total for both items was $149.(and some cents) after taxes and free shipping. Both those together was CHEAPER than the premade external. And the enclosure comes with an eSATA cable. D

Enclosure http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817173040

Now, when I get it, I just connect the hard drive into the enclosure, screw the stuff in, plug it in, put it in via USB, format it, and then I'm ready to go?

D

I never made my own external HDD before.

That's some nasty hard drive though, 32 MB Cache?! That's crazy.

I typed in $87 then thought it was $89 so I changed it!!!!!!!!!!

I should stop second-guessing myself.

Or should I not?

You needed one with eSATA, but yet you're plugging it in via USB? Dmo can correct me if I'm wrong, but USB is slower than SATA and eSATA, so you didn't need an eSATA drive and enclosure, if you're only connecting via USB. The only way to take advantage of the eSATA is to connect it to an eSATA card.

CG is correct, you're not going to see any benefit at all from SATA if you're plugging it into a USB port. [b6789e233df]e[/b6789e233df]SATA is external SATA. Most eSATA enclosures include an adapter bracket to convert an internal SATA port to an eSATA port, as well as a cable. Since you were concerned about getting a SATA cable, I'm assuming you knew that and typed USB by mistake. Otherwise you wouldn't need a SATA cable at all...

LOL! No, silly. I'm formatting it via USB, and then using it via eSATA. My laptop has an eSATA port. P

Crap, will I still be able to mount it because it's an OEM hard drive?

Yeah...OEM just means you won't get all the packaging and drivers. You just won't get the retail box...which ya really don't need.

Why are you formatting it via USB?

So I don't run into any problems via eSATA if there are any. P

I read that when I get the hard drive, I have to remove the jumper so it's in SATA II mode, whereas if the jumper is there, it's in SATA I?
