+lotsss of kma to anyone that helps...

CoD 4 is playing like shit on my computer. I can get 60 frames/sec when I'm standing still and nothing is going on, but whenever anything important happens (or anything at all happens), it gets really bad, under 10 fps at times. this is on my new computer intel core 2 quad q6600, 2 gb ram, 8800 gts, etc... hardware shouldn't be the problem.

I've tried updating drivers, and it didn't make a difference

...the weirdest thing is that when I set the game to lowest graphics/resolution it still plays horrible.

tipssss?

Not sure what to tell you it plays pretty well for me at 1920x1280, and I have less PC than you (dual-core Opteron 175, dual 7900GS in SLI).

What do you having running in the background? If you have an obtrusive AV (like Norton) running, that will kill performance on any machine. Same with some real-time spyware scanners. Check with Task Manager (or better yet, Process Explorer from SysInternals) to see if any processes are eating CPU cycles. Try killing all non-essential processes before starting up the game.

[bc428360c3a]EDIT[/bc428360c3a] Vista or XP? Vista still takes a performance hit with most all games.

yeah i would see what is running in the background.
a good way to eliminate things and make it easier on yourself is to do a selective start up and get rid of things that launch on logon that you do not need. if you dont know what it is, leave it, though.
then u can see what else is running afterwards.
another thought is to scan for adware/viruses if high performance software runs horribly and to make sure that all of your ram is working

What do you guys think is a good entry level video card for my pc? I still cannot decide.

My specs...

AMD X2 3800
2 gig ddr 800
320 gig hard drive
xp pro

get out of my thread.

anyways, I don't think it's stuff running in the background. I can play other games, like bioshock, just fine. I just did an ad-aware scan, deleted a few things, and it still runs the same way.

it's XP, by the way.

what is a "selective startup"? how do I make sure all of my RAM is working properly?

..any other ideas?

download a program called memtest. and run it.

it seems like a problem with that specific game since the others work.

type msconfig after going to start -> run
then hit enter
a window will pop up.
go to start up.
a list of programs will be there.
take out what you do not want to have load up on start up

it will ask to restart or not and also ask to show msconfig on every startup

I've had that problem with my 8800GTS. I've got the exact setup as you(q6600, 8800gts 640mb, 2gb ram) I would get 30-40 FPS in Day Of Defeat every once in a while. It was just totally random, I was just playing and it started to lag and look like crap. I just rebooted my PC and it started working fine again. I'm not computer genius, but could it be the video card getting too hot and it not running correctly? Even with it's built in fan and all of that stuff I've still burnt myself touching it multiple times, I'd say just let your PC cool down for a bit, but as I said before I'm no PC genius so I'm not sure exactly what that'll do.

gigabyte P35C-DS3R

hehehhehe

Single player or multi-player (or both)?

You can check in your nvidia control panel to make sure your antialiasing setting is set to "Application Controlled". I've read that helps.

Then, also try with blur, glow, and specular map turned off.

try turning motion blur off. Aside from that, gigabyte is not known for the best boards around that may be the problem, but I definetly cant say that for sure.

soooooo I finally fixed it.

I went through options switching literally everything until I found that the problem is sound-related.

I needed to switch "sound EQ filter" off.

what is "sound EQ filter"? should updating drivers do the trick?

JOSHBOX

23-11-2007 20:51:26

wow I didnt even think about that, are you using onboard sound? If so, upgrading to a ~$50 sound card will take a large burden off your cpu, effectively increasing your performance, not a bad idea.

zdub08

23-11-2007 21:10:08

yeah, it's onboard. do you (or anyone else) recommend any brand/card?
