I took a chance on some RAM on eBay that was sold as untested. I bought four sticks for what one stick normally sells for.
As you might expect, none of the four sticks work in my laptop (1 long, 3 short beeps). I've only installed the RAM in the expansion slot so far, and not yet removed the keyboard to try the second slot.
So I guess my questions are thus
