The LCD on my Canon SD300 broke this weekend so I need a new compact camera. I don't want to spend more than $300 and I want it to be SD since I have a few SD cards already. I am looking at this Canon

Any opinions?

I have the SD10, which is the 3 year old version of the SD40 and love it

I think they're under $300, and smaller than you cell phone, so you can keep it in your pocket to have at any time.

I have this camera

I REALLY like it. It's not pocket-sized, though. My previous one was a Canon Powershot, that was pretty sweet, and a lot smaller.

I like it a lot but the optical zoom is kinda low. Does that cause any issues?

Too big. I need a pocket sized one and I'll get a Canon Digital Rebel someday...

I wouldn't worry about it. 3x is about as high as you'll ever get on a pocket-sized point and shoot, just based on the physics of magnification. 2.4x should be just fine for what you're wanting it for.

I was actually going to get one for my girl friend for her birthday coming up soon and that's the one I was looking at. Great reviews on cnet (which I always use for electronic reviews). Plus it's a small, good looking camera.

Sony Cybershot is a good camera. A little better on zoom and they get smaller every season.

I'm not a fan of Sony because of the memory they use...

Sony cameras are overpriced, and lower quality than a Canon or a Nikon. My standard advice to anyone for digital cameras is to choose a brand famous for their film cameras.

Don't laugh, but I bought a Kodak Z885. 5x zoom, digital stabilization and takes SDHC cards. The specs are great for the price (less than $150) Might be worth considering.

I'd go with your first instinct and go for the SD1000.

EDIT Plus at newegg you get $20 off using code Paypal20 if you use paypal.

Yeah, I saw that on SD earlier and jumped on it. It's not often we see dollar-off discounts there.
