For those running wireless, what model router are you using?

Now that I have a laptop, I want to pick up a router. I went over to the Lynksys site and checked out the prices at bestbuy.com, the N-class routers are double the price of the g-class routers. Considering it's just me using one extra laptop (and possibly my xbox360) in a mid-sized apartment, do I (or should I) pick up an N-class router?

Because my laptop comes with built-in wi-fi

will it pick up the signal on it's own, or do I need to buy anything extra? If I go somewhere that has free wi-fi, will there be any problems since i'm using the laptop at home?

I'm wondering what others are using and if they are happy with what they have? Is there anything I should look for (either positive or negative)?

Personally I'm not a fan of Linksys, despite their popularity. They're cheaply made and I've had reliability problems with Linksys gear in the past.

I think Netgear and Buffalo build better products, and I've always been pleased with them. I recently upgraded two of my Netgear AP's with a Buffalo High-Power WHR-HP-G54 router/AP with a hardware switch for AP mode (I don't use wifi routers and prefer a dedicated AP). The range is excellent -- I needed two AP's previously to cover my whole house, but this one does it by itself. Buffalo is also highly regarded in the networking community.

D-Link DI-624.

Also, you won't get the full functionality of the N-router if you don't have a N wireless adapter. And I know the 360 wireless thingy isn't N, it's G. But if your laptop supports it, which it does...then go for it. D

It picks up signals on its own.

FOAF is right about this, you cant utilize the full potential of the N router without an N card (There are still speed and range benefits w/o both but not nearly as dramatic). I hate to do this plug but I just listed a wireless N card on ebay if you're interested. Dlink gave me the Wirelss Xtreme N router and this card to test. The router is amazing so im sure pairing it with this card can only help. http//forum.freeipodguide.com/viewtopic.php?p=689299#689299

I have a toshiba too. There should be this switch somewhere around the laptop. It says on/off. On my laptop its on the front, but on my dads its on the right side. When its on it will tell you all the signals it has picked up. I can pick up my neighbors unlocked signal and connect to it(not that its legal) from inside my house.

Everytime you go somewhere like Starbucks, a hotel, you can pick up a signal without a problem as well.

and At home I have a Linksys router

I dont know much about N routers, but I think theyre faster.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I did see Netgear, D-Link and Buffalo routers in the Sunday Best Buy ad.

My laptop is N-class compatible, so I won't need a card. But I will check out the NetGear Xtreme N router.

The more I think about hooking up my 360, I only have one game and I don't play it very often.
