Backing up files?

I just got a 400gb external HDD (well, internal HDD with an enclosure), which I plan to use partially for backing up my music and photos. I plan to write a .baturl==http://=http:///url file to zip the files, then move the zip to my external HDD. I'd then just schedule it through Windows Scheduler.

My question, is there a better way to do a weekly backup of a few different folders?

I know there's plenty of utilities out there that have scheduled backups of whatever specified folders you want.

Actually if I could just get my hands on a good standalone command line compression tool, I'd be all set.

Windows Backup that comes with XP works pretty well for me. It is schedule-able and does compression.

Doh.. I didn't even know XP came with backup software.

Thanks David )

D

I like it because it support shadow copies, meaning it will copy in-use files that are normally locked from regular filesystem access. That's especially useful for backing up your user profile while logged in as that user.

Very cool. Do you just backup your full Documents and Settings folder, or the full folder for your username or what? I've never backed anything up, and it would be handy to capture my whole user profile.

I believe the full folder for your username is your profile. It contains all your Documents and Settings and whatnot.

And you can even have it wake your computer to run the task.. Very cool!

I backup the entire Documents and Settings folder. That way you get the All Users and Administrator profile, as well as your own and any other regular users.

^ Yeah, you're right. My mistake. For some reason I was thinking that folder was in your profile folder. Yeah, do what Morris said. D

This reminds me of an embarrassing mistake....one that I've yet to rectify.

Raid 5 FTW!

NTbackup is perfect for this kind of thing and built-in to XP...
