If you want to know how it's going to work, here's some snippets from Wikipedia that explains just that

[quotedfe8485176]The Apple TV is enabled to stream digital content from any computer running Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows running iTunes onto an enhanced-definition or high-definition widescreen television.

Apple is selling the device for US$299, and Apple began shipments on March 20th.[/quotedfe8485176]

[quotedfe8485176]You can take a movie, download it to a computer, and put it on your iPod. But what about that big flat screen TV you just bought last weekend? You need a box to drive that big screen TV. How's the box going to talk to the computer? Do I want to string cables throughout my house? So I'm going to talk to it using wireless network, to get the content from the computer to the box, from the box to the TV.[/quotedfe8485176]

[quotedfe8485176]Apple TV sports an updated Front Row-esque interface. The device is compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows through iTunes.

Apple TV is also confirmed to run a cut down and trimmed version of Mac OS X, limiting certain features that are available in a regular computer.[/quotedfe8485176]

It's basically a computer that takes content from your computers' iTunes and transfers it to your TV.

You can have your appleTV actually download content to its harddrive, but only from one computer. So if you have a main computer or something.
