Maybe something's wrong with the connection to your mobo. Did something happen that made the last one go bad?

I know this is a stupid question, however, this happened to my friend. Is your computer plugged in, and is your surge protector turned on?

I just have to ask that, because sometimes that happens. Plugs get loose and get pushed out of outlets. Even some of the things in the back of the case get loose, happened to my sound cables once.

make sure you have everything plugged in correctly on the mobo. How tech savvy are you?

guelah75

18-03-2007 12:59:21

Their are two "power" connectors from the PSU to the MOBO that are plugged in correctly.

The PSU is plugged into the surge protector and the surge protector is plugged into the wall and powered on.

The PSU is 550W, if that matters and I do have two SATA hard drives and two IDE hard drives as well as two DVD drives hooked up to the MOBO

not sure if any of that will matter or not, also I consider myself somewhat tech savvy.

any other suggestions would be great

thanks for the help so far

The first PSU may not be bad, but when the computer would not power up the first thing that came to mind was to replace the PSU

So I did

I guess it might be something else

I tested the surge protector with another electronic device and it is working properly

Even with the new PSU I am still getting no lights, fans, noise ect. from the computer when I power it up

Can't think of anything that happened other than I did experience some intermittent power loses at my home a week or so ago, the computer shut down after the first power outage.

I assumed that it was normal, then I went to turn it back on a few days later and nothing

After you say that, although it's very unlikely, but the power outage could've fried your system, even though surge protectors are supposed to prevent that from happening. (
It depends on how hard your power went out, how abruptly, etc.

also if, did you mess with anything or change anything besides the psu?

guelah75

18-03-2007 17:43:10

didn't change anything or mess with anything other than the PSU

anyway to see if the MOBO is fried?

this sucks

does any LED light up when you have it turned on?

no lights or sounds or anything

should I try unhooking everything except the MOBO and then try turning it on?

+ karma for your help so far

jonohull

My first thought when you said you had 4 hard drives and 2 optical drives plus whatever other things in there was that it was drawing too much power on start up, but you said you don't even have an LED go on. If it's convenient, look underneath your mobo to see if there are any obvious burn marks or anything that would give away a frying. Was this a brand new PSU? If so, it might be DOA. Does the PSU fan work?

manOFice

19-03-2007 10:33:26

yes, I would disconnect everything and see if the mobo gets power.

guelah75

19-03-2007 10:39:45

will try disconnecting everything except MOBO

The PSU is new, but no fan movement either?

manOFice

19-03-2007 10:43:18

I don't think the fan will be on unless the computer is on but it will still shoot power to the mobo....when you shut your computer down..and open it up you can see per say...the lights on the NIC or on the mobo, there is still power going through the mobo, you can easily be electrocuted, So don't be fooled if the fan in the psu aren't running.

guelah75

19-03-2007 10:54:59

no lights at all

checking the MOBO now, have to remove everything to get to it (

manOFice

19-03-2007 11:00:22

It's starting to sound like your mobo is fried...do you see any "swollen caps" as in capacitors? You can put your finger over each one and tell very easily if the caps are swollen.

ps. this post isn't meant to be perverted =P

guelah75

19-03-2007 11:08:28

didn't see any "burn" spots on the motherboard

checking the "swollen" spots now ;)

+karma for the help and the laugh

guelah75

19-03-2007 11:18:26

didn't see any signs of swollen spots, but I did hook up the "old" PSU to the MOBO and I did see a light on the motherboard turn on

Now I have to figure out how to hook up the power switch to the mobo so I can see if it will power up

Do I need anything else hooked up to the mobo besides the switch?

for example a hard drive?

thanks for the help

manOFice

19-03-2007 11:21:55

I would try with your main hdd plugged in and once without it plugged in. I mean without RAM and a HDD it won't boot, but we aren't trying to get it to boot, we're trying to get it to turn on )

guelah75

19-03-2007 11:32:37

can't figure out where to put the "power switch" thing back onto the mobo

checking website now it's a Asus A8N SLI Deluxe

motherboard

JOSHBOX

19-03-2007 11:54:58

We will try to get an indication of power

UNPLUG ALL CABLES AND DEVICES FIRST

Plug in the 20/24 pin connector and the 4-8 pin atx connector to the motherboard

If your video card requires a power cable plugged in, plug it in as well.

Try and see if you can get any indication of power with just the mobo and ram.

if not

reseat your RAM.

reseat your CPU.

and try again.

The two motherboard cables should be all you need in order to get the unit powered on, if you cannot get any indication after these it is possible that your new power supply is bad out of the box (it does happen from time to time). If you do get ANY indication of power, note it and I will go from there.

I have the A8N board and it's a super pain to wire that power switch.

guelah75

19-03-2007 14:26:40

Ok so I get a light on the motherboard when I hook up the PSU to the mobo

but when I hook the "power switch" up and push the power button on the case nothing happens

I have looked at the manual for the mobo so I am sure that the power switch is in the right position

not sure what else to try

should I reset the mobo? and that would mean moving the jumper and removing the battery?

thanks and +karma to all that have helped so far, you guys are the best

manOFice

19-03-2007 14:30:22

Well resetting the jumper will reset cmos. Won't really help you, Do you have RAM plugged in?

guelah75

19-03-2007 14:33:28

Yes, I still have the two sticks of RAM installed on the mobo

should I pull one out

I also at this point have one IDE hard drive being powered by the PSU

no sound, but then again I can not get the computer to "turn on"

maybe a bad power switch on the case?

manOFice

19-03-2007 14:37:13

I would pull one stick out, I doubt it's the switch..but could be possible.

guelah75

19-03-2007 14:37:43

pulling stick now

guelah75

19-03-2007 14:42:52

still only get the light on the mobo and nothing else

guelah75

19-03-2007 15:35:55

Well I am happy to say that I got the P.O.S. working again

here's what I ended up doing

Removed old mobo and crap from a case and replaced it with new mobo

Tried THREE different PSU 500, 400, 350 watt

The 350 watt was the only one to work---crazy I thought

So now I have everything back to normal

Thanks to O4F-Manofice, JOSHBOX, jonohull, Paczki, and of course
TFOAF

You guys saved my computer from being dropped out of my bedroom window and then getting run over by my 4x4 ;)

+karma to everyone when i get some more

19-03-2007 17:46:13

oops should have said that I kept the same MOBO and replaced the PSU with a 300 watt one and replaced the case as well with some parts that I had sittin around the house

put everything back together and it worked!

again without the help of this community I would have shitcanned the whole damn thing )

Yeah, I've had power supplies fry stuff in my computer before. Make sure you get name brand PSU, not some cheap one. PC Power & Cooling is always a good choice.

Spyder228

I have a Hiper 580 W. Thing is solid as a rock with constant voltages across all of the lines. Or so the review said, but I've never had a problem with it or any PS for that matter.
