Hey there, I think I am gonna finally throw down and get myself a laptop. I am hoping to spend somewhere between 500 and 1000. Nothing too fancy, mostly for music, web, and some movies. Suggestions on brands? No macs.. they bad for you. What are some tips I need when buying?

I'm very happy with the Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 I bought a month or so ago.

Intel T5200 Core 2 Duo
160GB SATA HDD
DVD Multi-Drive -R/+R/RAM
1GB DDR2 RAM (I've upgraded to 2GB)
Intel 945G Integrated 3D Graphics (not bad, actually)
Intel 802.11g WiFi + Wired Ethernet
Intel HD Audio
4 USB + Firewire
Vista Home Premium

I got it for $850 after $100 rebate at CircuitCity. I wiped Vista and installed Ubuntu, which runs perfectly on it. I've owned several Dell laptops and frankly I like this Toshiba better than any Dell I've had.

For a couple hundred more you can get the S4487 which came with dual 120GB HDD's and 2GB RAM. Everything else was the same.

I also own a Toshiba Satellite, mine is about 5 years old and is still better than most laptops I see. I've never had any problem with any hardware at all. My next laptop will be a Toshiba Satellite. I've never even had to call support before. Two thumbs up for a Toshiba Satellite.

The low end Toshibas are generic rebrands though, aren't they? I remember reading something about the ones from Black Friday being way below par for the brand.

Haven't heard that, but no idea really. This is my first Toshi, I'd heard great things about them for a long time. Read some very positive reviews on this one (the A135 line is brand new, just released in January), and with CC's sale + MIR I figured I'd give it a shot. Honestly it's every bit as well built as the Dell's I've had. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, but again I've only had this one for a month or so.
