Hi,

I'm in the market for a dvd burner for my computer. My friend has a lightscribe burner and that was pretty cool. I realize you need special disks for lightscribe, but it also burns regular disks as well so having a lightscribe feature would just be a neat extra feature. I'm a little confused as to what burner I should buy... there are so many of them and price varies as well. I was looking at circuitcity.com and they had this external lightscribe burner. I figured that'd be cool because I could plug and play and burn stuff at my house and if I wanted to I could bring it to a friends house and burn some of his files if I wanted too. I'm pretty much open to anything right now.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to purchase?

Thanks in advance,

'bruman'

fipg was down and I was impatient so I bought from newegg

http//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827136105

"LG GSAH10LI -- White 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE DVD Burner With LightScribe - Retail" for $36

And a spool of lightscribe dvd+r and cd-r's.

Hope it was a good decision )

It looks good but if you wanted lightscribe I would've gone for the dmorris recommended one... Too bad fipg was down.

I can still cancel it from now until Monday (newegg doesn't ship on the weekends), but i'm not so sure it'll make that much of a difference.

from what i read, dmorris recommended this one

Is it really worth canceling and ordering that one?

No, I'm sure it's fine. I mostly said it since it would've saved you some cash.

Not always. They're known for their good firmware rather than their drives, in fact they use a lot of rebadged Lite-On's and other (much cheaper) brands. You pay for the brand and the firmware. And their more recent models have received mixed reviews. Personally I wouldn't spend the price premium on one myself.

I prefer lite-on burners they are as reliable as plextor or sony and they cost half as much. I bought one 2 years ago with lightscribe for 50 bucks. I only got it because I have a lite-on mouse for several years and it worked perfectly for years so i thought what i could lose. Just my thoughts =)

I have an NEC that I bought a few years ago and hasn't failed me yet. Only $40 from newegg.
