Here's an interesting video I thought I could make a thread about since the discussion could be big and the video thread kind of has nonsense videos.

I'm seriously about to try this just for the heck of it as soon as I can find an Ethernet cable. Someone else try it with me. P

Interesting...that guy is so goofy...lol

Wth, he just wraps an Ethernet cable around a cellphone and gets more signals?!?

Yeah....I don't buy it....It doesn't make sense that your pc would recognize the fact that you had a cellphone WRAPPED up in an ethernet cable after you plug it in....He's just screwing w/ ppl.

Also what type of salad bowl was he using? I'm at the store and I can't find anything like what he's using.

If you really want to boost your signal, put linux on your router. It also adds expanded functionality. Look at OpenWRT and DD-WRT.

What an interesting idea ... O.o

And just how do you hack the router's firmware and install whatever you please on it? lol

I tried using a Linux system for my Linksys, it actually disabled my router all together lishrugli

My Network is pretty cool, I have a Linksys WRT54G v2 and a Netgear hub and a USB Print server.

[MODEM] <-> [ROUTER] <-> [NETWORK HUB] <-> 4 DESKTOPS, PRINTER SERVER, FONERA WIRELESS ROUTER

And then 3 laptops and one desktop connect wirelessly.

That's a total of 11 devices routed together, 7 are wired. The hub has 8 ports, total of 1 port available. The router itself has 3 ports left to use.

But yeah, the I installed the DD-WRT software and it totally disabled my system, although I <3 the interface and all the extra options.

I decided to never try hacking my linksys. My network consists of a router, which has 2 desktops running from it, and has a network switch running from it which is then in turnrunning out to another network switch and then it splits..... (the reason for the chaining like that is pure distance of the shop it's running in and we needed the repeaters in the switch)

one run goes to yet another network switch which then has two dvt vision cameras on it, and a laptop and desktop as well as an old pentium II machine that we vnc into and use to feed data (dmc/RS232) to the CNC Mill....The other goes out the building, into the ground through a pipe across the street up the side of the driveway of my parents' house along the front of the house and into the basement of the house where it hits a wireless router acting as an access point and switch....Then from the basement there is a cat5 run up to my bedroom where I have another switch, and my laptop, desktop, tivo, xbox, and xbox 360 are connected. Also there is another desktop in the house that is running wireless as well.

CRAP...I forgot a switch on the right side....The wireless router should be connected to an additional switch, and it's off of that switch that the desktop, laptop, xbox, 360, and tivo come off of.

I realize it is kind of an ugly configuration; however, I see it to be sweet as well. I have 13 devices running on it (and I'm probably forgetting something), it's set up w/ all static IP addresses, and the coolest part about it is that we run from my dad's shop across the street to my parent's house! to share the internet connection. It has been working flawlessly for months and months now.

I've changed the firmware (call it hack if you may) on my linksys router, and overall, it does not help too much to increase the Xmit Power (Wireless Signal). Your Xmit Power is 28 at default, and can increase safely to 70, 85, or 100 depending on who you believe. Yes, it does increase your signal, but then at higher Xmit power, the receiving end has trouble receiving higher frequencies. For example, at the max Xmit Power 250, you will have a huge radius, but most wireless adapters won't receive the signal. Also, increasing the Xmit Power increases the stress on your wireless router, thus causing it to heat up. It won't cause it to explode, but it will heat up a lot.

If I had any confidence in my self with hacking/modding in general I would do it but I know I would brick mine. lol

No you won't. I didn't brick mine and I don't' have too much knowledge about it.

Just make sure you have a copy of your old firmware (which you can download from your router company's website). I didn't have my original firmware, and then it took unnecessary time to locate a copy of it..
