So I need a new computer. I am probably going to build it myself just because that is fun. My question is this
Do I wait until DirectX 10 video cards are things are more Vista compatible or do I just go for it? I don't want to have to make any major upgrades for at least a year or 2.
What you think?

I could've swore you posted this recently. You must go through PCs like potato chips. )
I'd probably wait until after deployment of Vista. There could always be unforseen hardware bugs and recalls not fixable by patches. I'm no dmorris, though. ;)

I keep wanting a new system but keep waiting. My current system is not working right and my XP is all of the sudden not passing genuine checks (that what I get for buy a license off Pricegrabber). I want to be ready to rock with Vista so when I have to start supporting it, I'm not completely lost.

Wait a little bit until the next Geforce 8 series cards come out, even though the 8800GTX cards are DX10 compatible. I assume the future Geforce 8 series cards will be much improved on and better support for DX10. It shouldn't be that long until the newer cards come out.

If I do overclock it would be very moderate. I am more interested in stability...

Unless you means ATI's line of DX10 cards, I haven't heard of Nvidia coming out with any new 8800 series cards for another few months.

There are a plenty of stability tests. A decently overclocked system that can past a series of stability tests is just as good as a non-overclocked computer.

Yeah, major brands like Dell have been selling OC'd machines. It just isn't as scary these days, but moderation is key.
