Computer Virus...

So I get home after a long night of partying last night and open my computer to see porn pop ups and a virus warning at the bottom of my computer... I guess my roomate decided to look at porn on my computer and being a computer illeterate dickweed clicked on something that got me a virus. I used SpyBot and searched for anything and got rid of everything I could and it hasn't gone away. there are 2 warnings going crazy and pop ups every once in a while in IE, what suggestions do you have?
alerts say
"System Alert Malware threats
Your computer is infected with a back door Trojan that allows the remote attacker to perform various malicious actions."
and
"Critical System Errors!" (the rest of this one won't pop up now)
What can I do to get rid of these and how serious are they?
any help is appreciated and +Karma for help, Thanks

Run the virus scan to find where the virus is and delete it, apparently it's not all gone. (Do it in Safe Mode, if necessary). Clear all your cookies and temporary files too. I guess that'd be a good starting point.

download avast AV (www.avast.com) it's free for like 1200 days and its one of the best anti virus out there. If this thing doesn't find the virus, nothing will.

Should be an option, instead of just deleting them, should have a Quarantine button.

lol, the simple solution when you "can't fix something" ... i do agree it'll work though )
try running housecall.trendmicro.com it fixes mosts viruses/spyware if activex doesn't work, use the java version both available on same page.
After you run that, let it fix all problems found, then continue to install adaware se (free as well) and download update, run full scan, remove anything found ..... if still in the system ... need to grab "hijackthis" (free) and cleanup the unnecessary stuff there ..... (if you get to the hijackthis portion and arn't sure what to get rid of just post it here and i'll tell ya what to remove... (post the hijackthis results that is)

I'd be careful recommending HiJack This to someone who doesn't understand what they're doing. It's a fast and easy way to render your system inoperable if you "clean" the wrong thing. ;)
Some of today's spyware and trojans are very difficult to clean, it usually takes several tools and reboots in and out of Safe Mode, and manual registry editing or use of HiJack This. My daughter-in-law used my wife's PC and wound up infecting the crap out of it, took me almost 2 hours to finally get the stupid thing cleaned, and I've been doing this stuff for a long time. They're getting very sophisticated nowadays. I'm calling my congressman to propose capital punishment for the scumbags who write this crap...

I hear ya, I too have been fixing this crap for good amount of time .... Vx2 BetterInternet used to be the worse for awhile, and now theres a million and a half variants of that particular type of spyware alone... The Windows XP Winsock Fix tool does wonders sometimes! P
but ya definitely don't PLAY with Hijackthis, if you don't understand what your looking at when you run it, just post the log results

How would I go about just reformating my hard drive? Just start over like it is a new computer?
