I'm planning to buy a new TV on black friday. Which kind should I get??? I can't decide on any of them. I'm looking for a 32"-42" for $1,000-$1,500. I only want retail ones. +10 KMA to anybody who can find me a good one on a major retail store's site. I've seen some that I like but I don't know which kind I should get ( I'm planning to hang it on a wall, so DLP is a no, and I have a 360 so I want HD. What are some good models, TVs, or stores? Thanks!

I'm getting a Panasonic 52" LCD Rear Projection TV for $999. You can't hang it on the wall but it's still very thin. It's HUGE.

Anyway, there's a lot of good info here ---

So we're looking for plasmas or LCDs. The top brands are Pioneer, Samsung, and Panasonic. Pioneer are too pricey, so a panny or samsung would be your best bet. I did a quick run through of the major retail store deals for black friday, and I found what looks to be a great deal

Panasonic 42" Plasma HD Television $1299.99 at Circuit City. Its probably the TH-42PX60Um which lists for 1799. Its possible its 50U, which would be a steal.

If you want even bigger, this will be $600 off on black friday http//www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Polaroid-40-LCD-HDTV-FLM-4034B/sem/rpsm/oid/160488/catOid/-12867/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
I didn't even know they made tvs, but it if it looks good, thats a steal.

edit yep, the 60U is the same one J4320 mentions in that thread.

that doesn't look like a bad one. I'd go for LCD (not sure if that one is, didn't really read it) I heard Plasmas have a terrible life span. Like 5 years or something. I don't feel like buying a plasma T.V. every five years. http//www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2564704&Sku=T24-3210 that looks nice. Toshiba, good name, good price. Can't go wrong

Yeah CircuitCity has crazy good TV deals. That's where I'm getting mine from.

Nah that's for older models. Newer ones last much longer.

[quote45d4a3d303="dmorris68"]However plasma half-life is up to around 80K hours, which if you calculate that out, means over 9 years of 24hr/day TV watching -- so it's no longer a practical limitation really.[/quote45d4a3d303]

Yeah, even though its not supposed to be true for plasmas any longer, I don't think they'll ever lose that short shelf-life stigma that plagued them early on. (

By the way, I've had the 50" version of that panny, (TH-50PX60U) for a year and I absolutely love it. I don't love how much I spent on it at the time, considering the price of the same plasmas now.

Yeah the only downside to the Rear Projection LCD is the bulb replacement. Does anyone know how long bulbs normally last?

Does anyone know what all the "price match guarantee" that Circuit City offers entails? Can I find a price of some online store and they will match that? I really want to buy in-store from somewhere despite the higher prices because I know I can go to that store if I have a problem.

zdub08

cnet gave it around a 6/10 (user reviews were alot better - 8/10, 9/10, 9/10, 10/10), but every other review i've read says it's a great tv for the value.

i think im gonna go check it out at bestbuy tomorrow.

No, retail stores will not match online prices. ( I've asked before.

Hmmm... I'm really liking the 42" Panny emoney mentioned. I'm probably going to pick that one up. I don't know if I should wait till Friday and see if it's cheaper or just buy it now. I'm also going to use a 10% coupon I saw on slickdeals )

Yeah, I have been looking a lot at that TV lately as well. I think I am going to get it this week. Where do you plan on getting yours and what coupon are you talking about? I think I am going to get mine at Circuit City just because they are reputable and I know where to go if I ever have a problem. Plus, I plan on getting their 5-year warranty.

I think the 10% coupon might be expired if it's the one I'm thinking of. Can you link me to it?

You won't regret it! )

How much is it if you buy it now? I would assume that black friday price of 1299 at Circuit City would be less.

DIABLO

20-11-2006 12:01:19

Aww, coupon expired a while back ( Still a good deal. I wonder if they'll make it even cheaper near the holidays now. Hmmm... what do you guys think? lol

I am pretty sure that if you buy the TV and they reduce the price soon after, that you can take it back and they will give you that money back. Not sure how that is with sales though. There are always exceptions but it is to ensure that they don't price drop RIGHT after you buy the TV for a higher price. I think I am going to buy that Pannasonic TV tomorrow or the next day though because it is the number one most popular product on Circuit City's web page and I don't want it to sell out.

[quote83dd4e9835="mpbollywoodking"]should i get a 720p or is that worthless?[/quote83dd4e9835]
No, it's not worthless. 720p/1080i HDTV is still spectacular to watch, and in fact there are very few 1080p sources yet (PS3 being one, and the 360 with the 1080p update being another), especially as far as TV sources go. If the price is right, there's nothing at all wrong with a 720p/1080i set. But if you're not shopping for deals and planning to pay full price anyway, I'd probably pay a little extra to get a 1080p set, just to be set for the future.

To those who want the 32" westinghouse, I hear they're not the greatest brand. This is a much better deal 32" Magnavox LCD HDTV. It's $499 at Staples on BF as an early bird special. The westinghouse maxes out at 1080i while this magnavox is capable of 1080p. Both have built in tuners I think.

Westinghouse IS is a very cheap, somewhat crappy brand, but are popular with folks who aren't too demanding due to their low price. Just remember that you get what you pay for, and if you're okay with that, then fine. ;)

I just got an e-mail from Office Depot offering a 42" Haier (never heard of it) Plasma for $799.99 after $200 instant and $500 MIR (out the door price, $1299.99). Looks like everybody will be unloading cheap plasmas this BF.

And be sure to ask about hdmi 1.3 capabilities. 1.3 has much higher bandwidth and is the best available connection (its what the ps3 uses). If I was in the market right now, I would either not worry about 1080P, or wait a few months, or even until late summer when the next gen of 1080Ps are released, and make sure I get one that's 1.3 capable.

Since the TV and the ad both say "MAG" instead of "Magnavox", I did a little research. It's actually a "Magnavision" TV, and it's supposed to be crap. Also, do 1080p 32" tv's even exist?

Killer722

Magnavision is a Magnavox model from what I can tell. This [=http//www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=19957937]This is a 32" lcd with 1080p, and it's a magnavox. I thought it was the same one just in a different color, but I could be wrong.

EDIT The brand is maginnovision, so it's not the same TV. My bad. Here's a link to the specs of the maginnovision for $500 at staples.[=http//www.maginnovision.com/product/products-lcdtv-MA-32EF1AC.htm#spec]Here's a link to the specs of the maginnovision for $500 at staples.
No 1080p, but it does have 1080i.

Mag Innovision has been making PC monitors for years, I've owned a few. They were pretty good for the price, but were definitely bottom-tier. Didn't even know they had moved into TV's, their PC monitors aren't nearly as prevalent as they used to be. Guess the competition was too tight in the budget monitor space, so they moved into HDTV's. Which is good for us because competition from budget lines force the top makers to cut their prices or lose a lot of business.
