Why is it that I can find HDMI cables on ebay for $20, but at Circuit City all of them are $80+. What are the different kinds/qualities?

I know someone who's brother works at Best Buy and gets everything at 2% cost. He said that an $80 cable only costs him like $10. shock I guess they're so expensive because the average person wouldn't know to get them from somewhere else.

Because boutique cables like Monster are over-priced, over-rated, crap. They are no better than decently made budget cables.

I use Monoprice.com for all of my cable needs. Their premium HDMI cables are built better than anything Monster makes at a fraction of the price.

All cables I can get for 80% off most of the time. I work at a electronics retailer and i get it 10% above cost.

Would this cable do the job?

Or is it a crappy one?

EDIT Actually, 3-6ft should be enough - so would this 3ft Gold Plated do the job nicely at handling 720p signals?

Yes, they'll work fine. I do recommend stepping up to the 24ga net-jacket Monoprice cables. They are super-high-quality, heavy-duty, as good better than any of the expensive ones at still only a fraction of the price ($15 for a 3'). When I bought mine they had these 1-inch diameter ferrite cores on them, I see now they've dropped the cores. It did make the cables almost too heavy, considering the HDMI connector is a friction connector with very little friction or surface area to grab. But given the higher gauge wire and very thick insulation and shielding, the ferrite cores are probably overkill anyway.

I'm apparently blind. Can you link me to the best one you're talking about (for $15 or whatever) and 3 feet should do more than enough for hooking up the PS3. I can't find the right one - there's so many.

So, what's the main difference between this $15 cable as opposed to the $5 cable - both being 3 foot HDMI cables? Is it just this one is thicker/heavier because the other one has a gold plated end on it, too.

24AWG versus 28AWG
Net Jacket versus plain vinyl/PVC jacket

And in terms I can understand, please? Haha. I'd start hitting Google and do my research and everything but I'm just far too lazy for that, so what's the difference between the two in words I can understand.

Thanks in advance, of course.

Heavier conductor (wire), for better signal quality.
Heavier nylon-mesh-reinforced jacket with better shielding, for better signal quality.
Better "fit & finish" overall.

I'll take your word for it and pay the extra 10 bucks for the better cable. It comes to $20 shipped to Canada, and that's a lot cheaper than anything at retailers so I'm down with that. Just until that arrives I'll have to use standard AV cables - which sucks.
