I am thinking about trying out windows vista. I have read about it some on microsofts site, but I want to know from people here what are the biggest differences that you notice? What do you like/dislike about it? Also, I am supposed to install it on a seporate hard drive, correct?

( I know there is probably a thread about this in the off-topic section, but I haven't seen one about Vista in the tech section )

I suggest you create a partition on your hard drive and install Vista RC2 as a dual boot.

Nah, I won't touch it until there's a retail release. I've had issues with recent Microsoft Betas.

Would it be just as easy / the same thing as installing it on another HDD? I have 2 in my computer and one doesn't have much on it yet.

Yea, i've heard about Betas being buggy, but I wanted to try it and mess around with it. I have another HDD, this can't do any harm right?

well, I wouldn't put it on a harddrive that already has files on it, unless it's partitioned.

I actually think that you have to format the drive/partition when you install an OS on it.. i may be mistaken.

1. Yes
2. No, it's still Windows and crashes shit left and right. On top of that, the new "security" feature for running programs and installing shit and overwriting files is as annoying as Tiphareth!

I've been running on Vista for two months and my only problem with it is that Canon's drivers for my scanner don't work. Drivers for printer work though. I'd say that overall it has it's bugs but it's way less of a problem than windows xp is. Not the OS of choice for gamers though. It looks amazing and the search tool in every explorer window is really useful. The prompt about making security changes to stuff gets kinda annoying but you can turn it off. Overall, much better OS to use than XP Pro.

Isn't Vista going to retail for around $400? That is definately not in affordable price range for most people.

I've been running Vista now as my primay OS for a few weeks (since RC1 came out).
The installer is much better, still slow but better. I have no trouble with any drivers using the 32bit version -- x64 is lacking, but then so is 64bit XP.
Memory usage is actually pretty good, it does use more than XP, but nowhere near the stupid amounts some people online complain about.
As Aurelius said, the UAC is annoying, but once you turn it off you'll never be bugged again.
I'd recommend grabbing the RC2 if you can, I had some issues with DHCP that went away after upgrading to RC2.

Of course ymmv, but overall I think it's pretty good, although productivity-wise I don't think it really offers anything over the current incarnations of XP - just a new paint job and some rearranged furniture.
