Alright so it's about time for a new computer.

I'm not a computer gamer. I just need something that runs good while using Photoshop and running other misc apps.

With that being said, I'm thinking about ordering the Dell 5150 that comes with a 19" LCD[=http//www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dimen_5150?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd]Dell 5150 that comes with a 19" LCD.

I'm using $400 I got from Freepay and some birthday money to justify my purchase (I hate spending out of my own pocket).

For $694 this is what I'm getting ---

Is this worth it in your opinion? I'm not much of a computer tech person and I might be missing out on some other type of great deal or something just as good for less. Or is this good?

Mac Pro FTW!

I have never once used a Mac in my entire life. I don't hate them, I just never have used one.

Just make sure to add some memory.

Killer722

11-10-2006 15:28:36

That's horrible for that price, in my opinion. You should go with

http//configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DE510SAP&s=dhs

Add speakers (if needed, +$17), and its still cheaper than that setup, but better.

More memory, less hard drive space. IMO 160GB is excessive.

It doesn't look like too good of a deal to me. And with what you posted, it includes a 17" LCD for $649. Also the processor is worse. ?

That's funny. lol

Seriously. My D partition is a [bb326c7f15f]640GB[/bb326c7f15f] RAID0 array. At the moment (after archiving a few dozen gig awhile back), I have exactly [bb326c7f15f]32.4GB[/bb326c7f15f] free. Before the archive I was getting low-disk space warnings. ;)

If 160GB was excessive, 500+GB HD's wouldn't be flying off the shelves like they are.

It's interesting to see what [i5a11901d3c]you'd[/i5a11901d3c] do with a 160GB drive.

Games and apps fill it well enough, not to mention TV eps etc.

Music is actually a fairly small portion of my drive useage, maybe 20GB if that much.

Video capture projects. Some DVD rips. Several thousand photos. Multiple games clocking in at 2-4GB each. Multiple development tools and other apps at a gig or two each. A few work-related projects and databases. Etc and so-forth.

Oh, and I also serve as TSJ's offsite gay pr0n backup as well.

hehehhehe

11-10-2006 15:53:30

It doesn't look bad. Maybe you can find a good coupon on ebay to make it a better deal.

I think doylnea knows Dell deals pretty well, maybe see what he says.

Yeah, it goes fast these days. I have 752.6GB, and I'm running low already.

johnjimjones

11-10-2006 16:05:39

I have like 1-2 movies at most, only a few gigabites in music (I need more) and a few games, but I just delete the games I don't play anymore. shrug I have like 12GB free too.

Okay those are the new specs for $804.

I don't know about this. I'm going to be running Photoshop and Firefox basically. I don't think I need all of that.

So can anyone show me the best setup possible for $500-$600 or maybe even less?

I think I may actually just go with this ---

I can appreciate everyone wanting to build a gaming rig, but he's said a couple of times, he just wants a new PC.

check out delloutlet, if you're set on dell.

Here are a couple of nicely set up computers for less than $600
http//outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventoryDetails?systemId=E6WFV811&~lt=popup&c=us&l=en&s=dfh&cs=22
http//outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventoryDetails?systemId=FCVK2MW6&~lt=popup&c=us&l=en&s=dfh&cs=22

Here's another that will suit your needs as well ($429)
http//outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventoryDetails?systemId=EEEGCAHV&~lt=popup&c=us&l=en&s=dfh&cs=22

Finally, here's one that is a great place to start, with lots of room for upgrading if need-be.

Gigante

11-10-2006 17:01:35

How much will an extra gig or ram? I like lleaving my comp on and it seems to help a lot. But if you don't leave it on muh or do a bunch of hardcore apps for extended periods, then you are good.

btw, hard drives definitely go by quikly, so 250gb is minimum. I have about 1.3TB right now with plans for more soon.

johnjimjones

11-10-2006 19:07:17

I would think that it would be cheaper just to buy the extra space not through Dell. It's cheaper for more space if you just go through newegg or whatever.

WTF...

I ordered the computer on Sunday night and it is now Tuesday and it says I have no orders in my account...

When I completed the checkout on Sunday night it said that a confirmation email was sent, but I never got one. And to make matters worse, I didn't copy my order number that was on the screen or anything. My card didn't get charged either.

This $250 off deal ends tomorrow. What should I do? Order again? I guess I'll have to call them first and see what's

dmorris68

17-10-2006 15:49:35

Call them. If you have an order in the system they can pull it up by address. If not, they can place the order over the phone while the promotion is still in effect.

J4320

17-10-2006 17:06:49

Yeah I called last night and I put in my phone number but it said I had no order. It said that it can take up to 24 hours for an order to show up but it's been it's been a lot longer than that. So I guess I'll call and reorder.

New computer received! It's so fast with 2 gigs of memory. D

I love it compared to my old Celeron.

Now I have to install a TON of stuff on this computer. What would be the easiest way of transferring all of my music from my old computer to my new one? That's pretty much all I need to transfer over.
