I have always wanted to assemble my own pc and I think I will do that when I get some time; but I would like to know what parts would be required to get the rig up and running. Could someone who knows what they are doing please tell me what all would be required and if possible, link me to examples?

How do you know if the motherboard will be able to attach to the case?

For starters, you need a budget of over $1,000 for a decent build. Also, a new series (GeForce 8 ) is coming out in November so that will drop video card prices.

1,000$ for a awsome computer 700$ for a great computer any less and you get a good computer. The next gen cards are going to be sweet (direct x 10 fucking owns) but you don't have to wait you can get great cards now for 150$ and just upgrade then or whatever.

err the OS costs $100/$200 itself so that drops the price alot. I guess it depends on what you mean by a decent computer. The DX10 cards are only available for Vista computers so they are pretty useless. The price range on it right now it $400-500+ so I wouldn't even bother.

I always start with the CPU. Find the one you want. Then find the mobo that works with that CPU and has the features you want and is a good quality board. Then I find the best RAM for said mobo. Then I look for power supply (don't cheap out on a power supply, trust me). Then I find a case and drives, they are the least important really...

I would build a e6600 with a awsome nforce 4 mobo if there is any good ones out yet ( have not checked in a month ) then get some awsome OCZ DDR2-800 ram and a 600w PSU with at least dual 12v rails and a raptor 150gig with the acrylic window and you are set.

I am pretty sure that will end up being over $1200 when you include the case, video card, and other required parts.

Yeah you don't need the e6600 or the HDD. How about being helpful instead of pushing people in the wrong direction...

Well, you don't need the E6600, but the 4MB Cache is pretty good if you don't plan to upgrade for a while. Here is a pretty decent rig

I don't really plan to buy a new rig till Christmas sales.

The e6400 is a better chip for the money and that video card is a little much but pretty good...

Just to point out, that build was made for a gaming computer. So if you don't play games, and just need a computer to surf the internet, then you might as well go with a cheap pre-built one.

I agree that the e6400 is a better chip for the money, but if you don't plan on upgrading for a loooong time, then the extra 2MB Cache could be worth it to you. Who knows, maybe it will be useful in two-four years.

The video card seemed best for the money, plus it had really good rating wherever I searched.

Very nice selection of stuff there. Might consider a cpu cooler from zalman or thermalright to replace the stock fan if you're looking to overclock too. The new Conroe chips really make me wish I were in the market for a new comp right now. I think I'll be waiting until college to get a new rig (probably SFF too) so hopefully by then I can get a nice quad core system. )

Yeah that GTO has been on some hot deals forums a couple of times since the price on it is pretty good. Might not want to dump money into a DX9 card with Vista so close and the DX10 cards about to pop though.

Thanks a ton! +kma. I could probably find a slightly less expensive video card if I looked around and still have a decent gaming rig. shrug Will a 2.4 ghz processor do it? And are the core 2 duo like the pentium D's?

AIM me. I can tell you what will fit where and what I would recommend you get based on your minimum and maximum price that you'd want to spend.

Ya, of course you can go with a cheaper video card, what price range were you looking for? The 7900 GTO is the best buy in terms of noise, speed, and heat at the moment and that is why I recommend it. The Core 2 Duos, Conroes, are really different from anything else. I highly recommend getting them for the sole reason that you will not need to upgrade for a long time if you do. Here is a CPU comparison chart http//www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html
