I already got one of these that I saw on sd.net, and I was wondering if you do flash the firmware does that kill the public side of it so we don't have to share our bandwidth.

I ordered ~Mar. 4th and got it today. I mean you don't even need to flash it, it comes with a secure signal and a public one. Unless you just don't want to share you connection.

Allen626

09-03-2007 12:14:26

Yeah the only reason to reflash it is if you dont want the public signal being broadcasted or want the features of DD-WRT or openWRT.

You can do a lot of cool things when you reflash your router to DD-WRT. Like make a sort of wireless bridge to your xbox 360 so you dont have to buy the wifi adapter for 100$. All you need to do that is another wifi router and this fonera router and a short ethernet cable.

I also got 2 routers (had another person get one for me) and I bricked the second one I got because it froze in the middle of reflashing and I messed it up even more when I tried to telnet into it. I can fix it but it would require purchasing about 10$ worth of extra equipment.

The latest firmware version (0319) appears to support client bridge mode (plug it into your xbox and you can wirelessly connect to your router, and everything will be on the same subnet rather than two different subnets with the previously client mode only versions).

Just set your DNS to 88.198.165.155 you have to do it by manually setting your IP. So set your IP to something that is in your networks subnet. It is probably 192.168.1.X. X being 1-254 although 1 is probably used by your main router.

Use this for client bridge. http//www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/LaFonera_Software_Client-Mode
Turn it to Client Bridge instead of Client when it asks on the Fonera settings section.

[quoteff88200faf="Shroud"]this flashing process looks pretty complex, how long does it approximately take? add about 30 minutes for my incompetence.[/quoteff88200faf]

It was pretty easy, some of the steps (like the writing to the router) take 5-10 min but you don't have to do anything...it's just writing...

Overall it took me about 45 minutes (probably less...but I wasn't timing it)

If anyone knows how to turn this router into a repeater (to expand my wireless network) I would really appreciate the help.

Allen626

29-03-2007 00:09:39

Its probably not completely bricked. Try packet sniffing your line when you first plugin the router to see if it reports arp requests and then telnet to that ip.

If I knew what you meant, I'd do it...

And I know it's not a complete brick, It receives packets, but I dont think it's sending any (or many) back, not enough to ping it atleast.. When I ping the IP and connect the router it starts saying "Request Timed Out" or something along those lines.

I recieved a second today that I will try using a different method and hope this one isnt bricked as well... if it is, I'll be investing in a serial cable for it.

Enabling Clint-Bridge Mode
http//www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/LaFonera_Software_Client-Mode

For the flashing thing, its one of those desktop sorta video things that shows you all the steps, I had to change a couple things in tit because my http file server was using a different IP than shown, in that case, its just a matter of changing the IP shown to the IP that you see... And I'd suggest using a laptop to watch the vid and flashing with a desktop, it made it much easier..

The Client Bridge thing is extremely easy, takes about 10-15minutes if you go through it word by word.

I got an extra, but I'm not going to give it up I don't think. The fact that I can use it as a client means it's nice to have around.

As much as this has been abused, I bet FON will try again. This has been the second time they made the offer, and I know the first time (invites) it was harder to get one than this time.

By the way, has anyone posted pics of the internals? The ac adapter is 5v (like USB), so I wondered if there were some unpopulated spot for a moddable USB jack.

No but you can make a USB to DC mod out of a old usb and DC cable. It may have problems if the router is on a lot of load but it is still cool.

No, I realize that. I've even made them before.

The reason I asked for internal pics, specifically any unpopulated solder points (like the size for a jack), was in case the IC might handle a USB interface. I was wondering if this thing (Made by Accton, I see) might be a downgrade of something with a USB interface that could possibly power [i6730eaf09f]and[/i6730eaf09f] allow the client interface sans an ethernet jack.

Not too likely, but I wanted to see. ;)

Well, I discovered this wonderful thing called Google (you should try it) and learned the answer is no. I did see that there is a second unpopulated RP-SMA jack though. (diversity!)

I've got one already flashed that I'm not using, but not sure I really want to part w/ it as it's my last one. If it's worth more than the shipping let me know and I'll think about it.

Sorry to bring up a old topic, I tryed to flash mine, Didnt work now All i get is a solid power light, if I plug it in with the ethernet cord to my notebook just get solid internet light, no wifi light, so assumed I bricked it, saw some stuff online about how to unbrick it but I dont want to make a serial cable, any ideas

Sorry i'm bringing up a really old topic. Anyways I just barely have a use for this because our new internet provider only has wired modems and i need wireless. When I hook this router up, only the private signal shows up, and once connected to that it won't connect to the internet. Do you know of a way to get it to work? Or do you think flashing it would solve that problem? I'm worried of bricking it if I flash it since i'll have no idea at all what i'm doing...

I think you need to register it w/ FON to get it to pass the internet through.....I'd just flash it...It's not too tough really.
