Higher-end external drives have Firewire interfaces. WD makes MyBooks with Firewire, they come in the blue boxes instead of green. Personally I'd prefer Firewire too.

Not really. Per spec, USB 2.0 is 480MBps, while Firewire is 400MBps. In reality, however, USB (like Ethernet) rarely bursts at full speed. Firewire is a more reliable, fixed-clock signal that reaches consistently higher speeds than USB. That's why Firewire is preferred for digital video capture, as USB tends to drop frames and lose sync.
That said, for most intermittent HD access, the difference wouldn't be all that noticeable. Until you hit long sustained reads or writes would you probably notice a bit of improvement. It certainly does make a difference in video capture, though.

You're looking at two completely different aspects of a hard drive when comparing those two. It is usually pretty simple to decide which you need more space versus speed.
