should i ever be worried that a company asks for a w-9 when it comes to redeeming a prize? Basically i completed an i-deal site for $50 and they want a w-9. I'm questioning why they need this information because the prize is under $600. Will i be claiming this on my 2008 tax return?

You don't need to include a W9.. just send out the redemption forms.

On what? The redemption page? It's coded in there to say that no matter what prize it is. If you read the terms and conditions you'll see that you're only required to include it if the gift is over $600 (or a combined total of over $600).

I just completed the $500 Visa grill site and it requested I send a W-9. I emailed them and got a response in less than 12 hours saying I don't need to send the W-9.

It shouldn't need to be said, but apparently needs to be anyway whether you send in a W9 or not, yes you are supposed to claim any payout, of any value, received in 2008 on your 2008 taxes. The $600 threshold just the legal threshold where they are required to get a W9 from you. Some networks will require a W9 no matter the amount.
