Ok i know for the giftcards over $600 we submit a W9 and then when tax time comes we have to report it as extra income, paying roughly 20-30%.
But what about actual gifts? Like laptops and stuff? It's not really income more a gift (casue one can go out and buy a lappy), so do we end up just paying like local sales tax or what?

Still pay the same taxes. Don't go by 20-30%. It depends solely on your bracket and any deductions you have. Everyone is different.

aight, I got the 1k visa coming and don't mind paying some of it back. But gonna try for a laptop and am wondering if it would be worth it if I'm gonna get taxed heavy on it.
