Has anyone else had problems w/plasma TV delivery?

(Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, but I'm hoping someone can give me some advice and answer a few questions)...

I've been eagerly awaiting the delivery of my plasma from Nuitech. I stayed home from work on Friday, only to be told by the UPS driver that he cannot bring it upstairs without a dolly or a second person to help him. (I live in a condo on the second floor). So anyway, he said he would redeliver it on Monday. Well, today is Monday, and UPS called a couple of hours ago and said that they could either place the television downstairs, outside of my building, or I can pick it up myself from the airport. There is no way in hell I am going to let something so expensive just sit on the sidewalk all day long, and I still don't know how I would get it in my house--UPS.com reports the weight as 92 lbs, which isn't much less than my own weight.

For anyone who has received the 42" Panasonic (or anyone who knows a thing or two about plasmas), do you think the tv would fit in the back of my SUV? Is it even safe to try and stuff it in my car? I saw some of the pics people have posted of their tvs (thanks Luca ;)) and the boxes don't look too big at all, but then again, pictures can be deceiving.

I don't know what to do cry cry cry Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening to my rant.

Can you call a downstairs neighbor to receive it for you until you get home?

Or if you have a full-size SUV it might fit. My house sits up on a hill with a pretty steep driveway, so I drove down to the end of my driveway and me and the Yellow Freight driver moved it from his semi to the back of my Sequoia. It fit but not with a lot of room to spare. A smaller SUV might have trouble. Maybe borrow a pickup or bigger SUV, or spend $20 on a 5x8' U-Haul trailer (if you have a hitch).

Well, it seems like your only choice is to come by the airport if it's not that far and pick it up. What kind of SUV do you have? Just keep in mind, it's probably atleast 3-4 feet in length plus packaging so it will probably be around 4 1/2 to 5 feet long and weighing 91 LBS. Your best bet would be just to pick it up in my opinion if it will fit.

I would take the rest of the day off and have them meet you at home. I was able to carry my plasma with my wife and she's a punk... I'm sure you and a local 12 year old can do it.

Whew, I feel a lot better now. Thanks everyone for the great advice. I should be able to pay someone in the building to bring it up the stairs. I still can't decide if I should pick it up myself or let them redeliver. I managed to find out that the box dimensions are 47 X 37 X 19. I have a Chevy Blazer, which isn't very big at all, so there's a chance it might not fit in back without tilting it or laying it down flat, but maybe I can put it in the back seat area and support it with blankets? I read on some TV forum that they should only be kept upright when transporting them. I'm really scared of breaking it!

No more merchandise freebies for me. I'll be sticking to gift cards from now on wink I think I'm going to go measure my trunk now.

Thanks again, all the advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Laying it down flat goes without saying in an SUV. I don't think one is made that could take it standing up. )

I laid mine flat for the trip up my driveway, all of 75 feet. )

It shouldn't be lishippedli flat, but if you're carrying it yourself and taking obvoius care, then it won't be a problem. If this is the same 42" Panasonic EDTV that the rest of us have gotten, it will be double-boxed with styrofoam spacers between the boxes, then the plasma is styrofoam packed inside the inner box. Nothing wrong with laying a plasma down flat, you just wouldn't want to bounce it around that way, or lay on something that could puncture the box and thus the screen.

A Blazer may be tight, I'd opt for the neighbor's help unless you can borrow a larger vehicle or trailer.

My brother and myself have both received the panasonic plasma that nuitech has been shipping (my brother's came last friday), and it is in a single box, but supported by plenty of foam on the top and bottom.

I have carried my boxed plasma from my house to my garage a few times. It isn't that bad. You're a girl, just use your charm to talk some men into helping you.

i was told you can't tilt your plasma more than 45%, that is what the delivery guys told me anyways...

That's probably because the shipping carton has tilt/shock indicators so that the shipper can be held responsible for damage. It's to protect you and the vendor from damage claims. If it's tilted more than 45 degrees then it's a good bet that the shipper either knocked it over, or laid it flat and stacked stuff on it. Either of which would likely have dire results.

There isn't anything about a plasma that requires it to be upright or forbids you from laying it down. In fact when installing the wall mount brackets, you're supposed to lay it down flat on a soft surface, like a bed. I've done it plenty of times.

^^ I can second that. I had it on my bed for a long time while building my wall mount out of 2x4s and angle brackets. lol

Hmm, this is interesting... what were you doing carrying your plasma back and forth P ?

I decided to let my mom come over and sit outside on a lawn chair with the television until she finds someone to carry it up the stairs, or until I get home, and in that case I will be the one to find someone to bring it up. I just don't trust myself to drive it home. I am planning to mount it on the wall, too, so it's a good thing to know about laying it flat.

Are you going to construct a mount like I did? )

I paid $10 for all the parts, and it is super solid. lol

Just 10?!? I'm jealous! I was planning to get a wall mount from Best Buy, but I'd love to save the $200 bucks and put it towards some fancy audio equipment, or whatever else it is people connect to their plasmas to make them really cool, but I'm not talented enough when it comes to building things to create something that won't send my plasma crashing to the floor a few days later.

That's not fair! lol! I have a whole flight of stairs in my way! I probably could carry it in, but it would be busted by the time I got it up there lol

FWIW, the panasonic panny from I-Deal fit perfect in my back seat of my Toyota Camry, i would say it should easily fit in an SUV

I love Nuitech sooo much! My plasma is back in the box and sitting in the dining room until I order the mount from Buy.com (thank you for that suggestion...I've used Buy.com in the past and have been really happy with their prices). I had my mom wait for UPS all day, but they never showed up. I finally had enough of them, so I called Nuitech to let them know what pains in the ass UPS were being. The rep I spoke to was such a sweetie, and they ended up getting a private moving company to pick the television up from the airport the very next day and bring it in my house. The nice guys from the moving company even offered to help me set it up )

And, I must say....it is indeed too heavy for one person!

There ya go. I had no idea nuitech would do that sort of thing.

Well it looks like you took Gigante's advice and decided to use your charm. ;)
