Is anyone worried about giving their ssn out just to get a free ibook, etc? While there has not been any malicious activities to date, how do we know there won't be in the future. After all, this is the company that sells all our email addresses. How do we know how they store it, do they shred the papers when they're done with them, or do they put the ssn into a database. I don't know about you, but my SSN is worth a lot more than 1k to me, and the amount it'll cost to clear up any mess will be more than 1k.

Any thoughts?

The sites that require a W-9 are pretty respectable... I know MetaRewards is owed by some credit company (something like that), they claim the shred them and Nui-Tech states that they do shred them...

I'm pretty sure it says on the certs where you fill out your SS#, and in the terms that come with your certs for Nui-Tech... For MetaRewards, they send you an email requesting the W-9 and tell you they will shred it...

MetaReward is indeed owned by Experian, one of the big three credit bureaus. If you're worried about Experian having your information -- it's too late, they know everything. ;)

gigante for a moment there you had me. i was thinking about giving up on one of ideal sites.

dont think any of these companies will mess with ssn. if they do they might get the feds after em or something.

if anyone is afraid they should contact all the bureas and put a credit freeze on their file. it costs $10 per company and will be $30 total .

I agree. That's why I signup for gifts less than $600 (unless it's YF Direct sites--no taxes on anything).

Identity theft is too serious an issue; why give your # out like that?
