I just got my iPod today D Hooray! Now, I went out for a bit and left it transfering stuff while I was away. Currently I'm putting about 4 gigs of music onto it from my laptop. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't seem to have a firewire port so I have to use the USB cable. It's been transfering for about 4 hours now and it's still going! Does anyone know how long this will take?

Hmmm...I wonder why it's telling me not to disconnect then.

Mine does that all the time, if you look at itunes and its not loading songs onto the ipod you can disconnect it. Mine is fucked like that too, everytime it is plugged into my computer it always says " Do not Disconnect" but I always do D

i transferred a few albums via USB and it also seemed pretty slow for me. the do not disconnect message was being pesky for me at first but it started working properly after a bit.

Well, if you don't have USB 2.0, it can take a little bit. That's a lot of data to be tossing around, though, in all fairness.

Gets an iPod and it's just complain, complain, complain.

wink

I'm not really complaining. Ok my fiance looked at it, and apparently it was not formatted yet. So how long does it take to format with the cd?

not too long. Like under a minute i think. My usb takes about 2 seconds a songs. So I can do 30 songs/ minute, which is plenty fast enough

Ok, I figured out what was wrong. For some reasoon the iPod installation was not working because I had iTunes already installed. I don't know why so don't ask me haha. But when I removed iTunes, the iPod was able to quickly format and install on my comp, and is now copying my songs to the iPod! So all's well that ends well.

Hmmm... to transfer like 500 songs takes like 2 min...? Then again I have a firewire port...

USB 2.0 is the same speed as Firewire FYI.

Yeah, FireWire kicks ass. I have 7000 songs in my library, and it put 5,000 on my 20GB iPod (filled to capacity) in less than 20 minutes. One recommendation DO NOT disconnect the iPod when it tells you not to. Your iPod could get seriously screwed up.

Eh, I always do. It's already screwed up. I always tells me not to disconnect on the iPod but on my computer it says it's safe to remove hardware and no songs are being uploaded onto it. Hasn't burned out on me yet.
