The boxes are free; the shipping charge is not.

I've never paid a dime for priority flat-rate shipping materials, they've always been free.

I don't fuckin' get it... so I can walk into a Post Office and just jack 20 flat rate boxes... and walk out the door and nobody'll say shit? If the USPS isn't doing me any favors, why are they pedaling this promotion? I thought I was on to something (

Wow, this is news to be, I need to go jack some of them. They come in handy with heavy as things.

They give them away hoping you will spend money to ship with them. You can take as many as you want though and even if you don't use them to ship something its not like they will know.

You can also turn the boxes inside out if you get the ones that are all brown on the inside and then it looks like a regular box and you can use it to ship anything even with another service.

4chan already takes advantage of those, haha.

I actually don't like when they do because I see it as leading to the USPS stopping that service.

Do you really need to turn it inside out for UPS, DHL or Fedex???? I'm pretty sure they don't care what the box says as long as it has their prepaid label on it....

Oh, I'm not sure if you have to or not I just assumed they wouldn't take a post office box since it could be confusing or whatever.

You can also turn the boxes inside out and send em through the post office without getting charged the priority price. Just make sure you use brown tape around the edges so they can't see its a USPS box turned inside out or they won't let you send it, its happened to me a few times.

Technically it is illegal to do. They give you the box so you can use it to send stuff with there service. The postal service is in debt enough, this is just another way that people rip them off.

You're still sending it with their service, you're just not paying the priority price. They give the boxes away for free, what if someone just takes some to use for storage? That wouldn't be considered wrong or whatever.

Plus, the postal service is run by the government who rips us off every single day so I really don't feel bad if i "cheat" them out of the couple cents it takes to make one of those boxes. Its not our fault they're in debt.

they don't give the boxes away for free, they give them to you for use when shipping via priority mail. by "considered wrong", do you mean illegal under US code title 18 and prosecutable as a felony? because that's what "misuse" of priority mail boxes is [src[=http//www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00001707----000-.html]src]

the whole "the government rips me off all the time" is a pretty lame excuse. first off, if you're unsatisfied with the government... its YOUR government, so DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. and second, stealing is wrong (at least to me...) regardless of the context. also, it's a good bit more than 'a few cents' to produce a printed, post-consumer-recycled box with adhesive.

in short, quit being cheap assholes (and committing felonies) and just buy or scavenge your own boxes.

now, setting all of that aside, priority mail service itself is a ripoff for most shipping situations. it's the exact same service as "first class" but at a significant price premium. now, if you're talking about bigger/heavier things, the flat-rate-regardless-of-weight from priority can save you some money, but for smaller items it's basically always a ripoff.

I agree with your moral argument, but the USPS is grossly mismanaged (more-so even than most government bureaucracies) and running off of a model that is about 20 years out of date. There's a reason the USPS bleeds more and more money every year, and it ain't because people are stealing their boxes.

In short, I agree, but the boxes are trivial compared to the other ways the USPS fucks itself (and us) over.

News Flash UPS and FEDEX give away shipping boxes as well. They will even give you the printer labels that USPS charges for. FYI.

Its not that easy...people try every day to get lower taxes, lower gas prices, etc. and nothing ever changes

Yeah, stealing is probably the best solution then

Jeremiah1218

20-09-2009 17:44:46

nobody said it was a solution...in my opinion its not stealing because they don't charge for them anyways but thats beside the point. My comment was in response to Admin saying if i dont like the government to do something about it and i was simply stating a fact.

idk y u guys r makin such a big deal out of people taking a couple boxes from the post office anyway that they openly give away
