I'm a full time college student who lives on campus...

I got called in for Jury Duty...I thought full time college students can't get called in?

Yeah, you should go. I went, got 3 days off work paid full days by my work, and then got 75 dollars on top. It is not so bad.

I think in Illinois they give you $10/day. Which is hilarious b/c it costs like $5.00 to parl, plus another $5.00 for lunch.

What's so special about college students that would keep them from getting summoned? Is it because you live in a dorm, and have so many neighbors, lol?

No, I just thought full time college students were not obligated to go to Jury Duty.

Not sure how it is in the US, in Canada if you get summoned and you are a student, you can withdraw. I got summoned once. It's too bad, I actually really wanted to do it, because I thought it would be interesting, but the case was scheduled to potentially last several weeks, and I wasn't willing to forfeit a semester.

You can withdraw from Jury Duty if you're attending school out of state, I think.

Ilan's sig makes me want to post a one-liner about the judge giving him a handjob or something.

If they call you I believe they'll ask if there is any reason that they shouldn't keep you as a juror. Then you can pull the "I'm a full time college student and have a lot going on right now" line. When I went a couple years ago somebody did that, and the judge said something along the lines of "Normally I would make you stay because I think being apart of a jury and seeing a trial work would be great for you as a student, but since finals are next week, I'll let you go". Depending what state your in it could be beneficial. I don't know how far you live from your courthouse, but here in Iowa you get paid a certain $ amount (can't remember what exact) plus mileage. If you live a ways from the courthouse, it would be a nice little chuck of change.

i'm surprised i've never been called for jury duty...if I got paid days off from work it would be worth it, if not you only get chump change for going...

What sucks for working people is that employers are not required to pay you for being absent for jury duty.

I think if I go I have to pay for parking and they only pay me $5, lol, and the drive up there costs more.

It's not hard to get out of it.

I had a cruise booked and I was called up 2 weeks before the cruise.

I called the county clerk and they took care of it. I might get called up in August again.

It's easy to get out of it if you want. Unfortunately for me, the trial was for this close friend of the family who got royally fucked by some people who he trusted (he was an elected official who got fucked by some liars). If I had known this jury pool was for him (although I suspected it) I would have been ejected at the interview!

I got Jury duty once, and I called the number and they said they didn't need me, so just call and see if you even have to show.

If being a student in your state doesn't automatically exclude you, you can get a postponement. Just call up and tell them when your next break is, and you'll get another summons at that time. I got summoned a few years ago while I was still in college full-time and I had to have it postponed until summer. When I got summoned again the case was settled out of court before I ever even had to show up.
