Sorry for your loss.

Okay, with condolences out of the way, let me be the insensitive clod the iPod I can maybe understand, but why would you leave your wallet/badge in your car overnight? Assuming this happened while you were in bed asleep and not just during a stop somewhere.

Just wondering since my wallet never goes anywhere without me, unless it's in the little basket on top of the AV rack in the bedroom, where it goes when I get nekkid. Oh, and my watch too, but sometimes I wear it even when nekkid.

I didn't do it on purpose. I normally take it inside. I was on the phone when I pulled in my driveway. I guess it just slipped my mind. Then when I saw that my car had been rifled through, I realized that I didn't have it. You're right D, it was my fault for leaving it there. I deserved to have it taken. What an idiot. Oh well. These things happen I guess.

Can you get in trouble for losing your badge?

You didn't deserve to have it taken. No-one DESERVES to be stolen from simply because they forgot something in their car, that's bull. That's like saying that someone who forgets to get a mammogram deserves to die of breast cancer, or saying someone who leaves their pepper spray at home one time deserves to be raped.

Well, it could be worse, you could have lost your duty weapon.

Funny story, and it just occurred to me that you'd appreciate it being a Canadian Border cop (edit I thought you were a border cop?)

Several years ago a semi-relative of mine (husband of my niece-in-law) went on like a month-long cross-country driving trip with his wife and her parents (my sister and brother-in-law). He is now a Federal Marshal on Con-Air, the plane they use to transfer felons from state to state, but at the time he was a Lieutenant on a small-town PD. Anyway, he goes with them on this driving trip. As they're driving up through the Northwest US, they decide on the spur of the moment to drive up into Canada and across to the east and come back down into, I dunno, Wisconsin or Michigan or somewhere.

So they cross the border and get tagged for inspection. They park the car and go inside the building to wait, and there he suddenly turns white as a sheet as the realization sets in. Not expecting to leave the country, and being a sworn LEO, he had packed his duty weapon, a Glock 17 or 19 I believe it was. Just as he is about to tell somebody, in comes a group of very irate border cops. Being an American LEO doesn't carry much weight when it comes to bringing unauthorized handguns into Canada, as I'm sure you know. Hilarity ensued. Not.

They spent several hours at the border wondering if they were going to be arrested. They were finally released, sans weapon of course. He had to report to work the day after they got home, so had to scramble to the nearest gun store to drop $500 out-of-pocket on a replacement, and THEN explain to the Chief why he lost his issue weapon. Had he not had the rank he had, or had it been a big-city department, he would probably have been fired.

I don't see him often (in fact I think I've only seen him once since that incident) but I'm always sure to give him a little grief over that. )

I took a Sig off a guy yesterday. Gang banger from ML King Blvd in LA. He was actually trying to get his life straight I guess as a truck driver. If only he had have said, "yes, I have a gun." when he was asked. There is nothing illegal about owning a gun as you well know. There is nothing illegal about trying to bring a gun to Canada. There is however, something illegal about trying to smuggle one into Canada. I feel bad for the guy (a little; he seemed like a good dude). Now he faces 3 years in prison for trying to smuggle a loaded 40 cal. BTW, it was ready to go with 1 in the chamber.

Gangbangers with SIG's? I'm impressed, the gang business must be paying well these days.

Next thing you know the gangs will be sending folks to factory-certified armorer schools. )

Well, that's some good news anyway. The punk probably was rifling through the wallet on his way down the street, saw the badge, and shat a monkey. lol

Of course later I'm sure he was all bad-ass with his thug-buddies and bragging about how he likes to rob cops.

That's great news - it's rare that a wallet is recovered if it's actually stolen (because they'll usually dump it in the garbage).

Still sucks about your other stuff...

MLK is generally a bad part of town, no matter where you are.
