For once, google has proven useless! It's been a complete bitch trying to figure out how much I will have to pay in fees for an acoustic guitar shipped from Germany (Bottroper Str. 23 b, 46117 Oberhausen) to the US (Lynchburg, VA 24501). The guitar, shipping included, is 1100 € ($1,415.04). Does anybody have any experience with this stuff? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would think as a US citizen ordering something from Germany you either shouldn't have to pay VAT, or could have it reimbursed, but I'm not sure of the current laws or how it applies to civilians exactly.

I lived in Germany for 3 years while in the Army. We were reimbursed for VAT whenever we had to pay it. That might have just been an agreement with the military though.

I'm pretty sure this still applies. My last couple trips to Europe I was given a slip at stores to be reimbursed.
