i got a letter in the mail today, one of those security types where you fold and peel to open. I open it and it says very little but its does say what my pin number is but there is no card inside. I dont know if this is a credit card, debit card, gift card, ect... there is a return address of
po box 421038
indianapolis IN 46242

I guess all I can do is actually send a letter to them saying nothing was enclosed, because it could have been stolen I guess. Even though the envelope was completly sealed.

if anyone has any other suggestions I would be all ears.

thanks!

Is it from your bank? I would call them. It might just be spam.

chewy

15-12-2008 13:17:16

that is the problem I have no idea, there is no easy way to contact them. there is no website, email address, nothing. All that is there is the return address. but is from another state, which I doubt my bank does business

Banks don't normally send debit cards and pins in the mail together. They'll usually arrive separately.

What I was about to post. They always arrive separately, and usually spaced several days apart -- otherwise somebody scouting your mail for cards would get the PIN as well.

You sure you didn't apply for a new card recently, or request a PIN change? It's been awhile since I got one of those, but I'm kinda surprised it didn't have more identifying info about which card/account it applied to. But for security they might not want to divulge much in case it too falls into the wrong hands -- I guess they expect for you to be expecting it and will know to what account it applies. )

I agree. I work at a financial, and I think thats pretty much standard procedure for all banks/credit unions.

Did you sign up for any cards?

If not, it's spam, if so, then call whoever it was that you signed up with.

How can there be nothing on the envelope or piece of paper to indicate where it came from? If there isn't, consider it spam.

The Pin always comes first. The card second.

It's probably the pin to your debit card or something, wait a couple days for the card to arrive.

Check your credit. Could be identity theft. Did it have the cut out holes to hold a card in place?

He received a PIN number. If it were a card carrier, it would not have contained the PIN. As several of us noted, PINs are mailed separately from cards.

Generally credit cards and gift cards don't have pin numbers that come like that. I would wager a guess it's a debit card. But in that case you would have gotten your card first. Pins always go out after the card.

TravMan162

18-12-2008 10:00:46

No they don't.

Pins come before the card.

Virtually all credit cards, and a few gift cards, DO have PIN numbers for cash advances. With some cc's you don't get a PIN until you request one, while others will send one automatically.

And they often do come before the cards.

Oh, and I heard somewhere, can't remember where exactly, that they're mailed separately. ?

cubbieco

18-12-2008 10:17:48

But the point still stands if you didn't order the card and know nothing about the card it might be a good idea to check your credit and see if you have any recent inquiries that you didn't sign up for.

Still seems completely bogus to me that the envelope etc that came had NO identifying features, no letterhead, return info, etc.

That in itself doesn't mean too much because they don't want it to look like its coming from a bank. The whole point is to make it blend in so nobody knows it contains a pin number. Do you have a gift card coming? A freebie gift card that you forgot about? Did you do a brandarama site a year ago? Did you do anything to receive this? Once again if you didn't I would really check my credit if I were you. Trust me, I've had it happen and its no fun to clean up a credit mess. Best to catch it early if you can.

www.annualcreditreport.com is where you can get 1 free credit report each year from all three bureau's (separately). If you haven't gotten your report for more than a year I would really suggest doing it now.

[quote7ad301d287="ilanbg"]wait, I'm confused.[/quote7ad301d287]

Allow me to summarize.

The card came before the pin. The pin was not included with the card because the pin comes at a time other than the time at which the card comes in. If the pin indeed comes at a time other than the time when the card comes in, then it makes the card that came in at that time worthless at that time because the pin hadn't yet come in at that time.

I hope that cleared it up.
