Just got into reading again, picked up Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk on a whim and I fell in love with his writing. He is the author who also wrote Fight Club and another book of his, Choke, is also becoming a movie on Friday.

[u3789438742]Quotes[/u3789438742][i3789438742]
"A good addiction takes the guesswork out of death. There is such a thing as planning your getaway."
"Humiliation is only humiliation when you choose to suffer"
"Sex pretty much cures everything"
"Unless everything can get worse, it won't get any better"
"There is no point in doing anything if no one is watching"
"Everything you love, will die"
"You might as well paint a house that's on fire."
"Reality means you live until you die. The real truth is nobody wants reality"
"The same as if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, you realize, if no one had been there to witness the agony of Christ, would we be saved?"
[b3789438742]"Did perpetual happiness in the Garden of Eden maybe get so boring that eating the apple was justified?"[/b3789438742]
"The only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage"[/i3789438742]

Anyone else read anything else good lately, or ever?

I've been reading a lot of Paulo Coelho books recently (11 Minutes, The Alchemist, The Witch of Portobello, The Zahir) and I'm currently reading Walden, by Henry David Thoreau.

About the only thing I ever read is either text books (for school and certs) and about 4 differant gaming and computer magazines. Other than that TV > Books. LoL.. I wish I read more. I just don't have the attention span for it.

Office Season 5 tomorrow ))))

I hate reading now and everything abou it. But at one time, I was quite interested in the works of Hunter S Thompson. Particularly [ifcf78750d2]Hells Angels[/ifcf78750d2] and [ifcf78750d2]Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas[/ifcf78750d2].

Books are infinitely better than TV. While there are a very few shows worth watching, there are millions (billions?) of books worth reading, and the imagination is the best high-definition set available. ;)

I don't have [b70d1962d58]time[/b70d1962d58] to read as much as I used to, and aside from magazines and tech/hobby/how-to manuals, much of my reading comes from audiobooks now. I have a ton of books, many yet to be read. My wife is constantly nagging me about selling/trading/trashing some but it's hard for me to do. I hoarde books.

EDIT left out the word 'time' which totally changes the meaning of my above statement. P

I swear that quote is straight from the lips of my 1st grade teacher ;)

I like audio books. Its not the books I don't like, its the fact that it takes me FOREVER to read them. I will read a page and realize my eyes were reading but my brain was thinking about pizza or video games and i have to read it again. So it just takes me forever to read a book. Audio books are great. especially for trips. But they are hard to find (unless you get them online). and even then, i end up listening to PCGamer Podcast often over the few audio books i do have.

You really feel that way about reading dmo? Man, I can barely stay interested long enough to read my son Curious George. I don't know why either. I often see books that I think will interest me topic-wise, but once I start into them, it's snoozeville for me.

I read a fuckton. Aside from the ~200 pages of weekly reading I do for school, I do at least an hour a day of personal reading. Been getting through like 2 solid books a week. Halfway through [udd0ac59201]Man's Search for Meaning[/udd0ac59201] by Viktor E. Frankl. This guy is probably one of the smartest people I've ever read.

Here's a video[=http//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD1512_XJEw]Here's a video of a portion of one of his lectures. Fucking genius.

EDT Forgot to mention that [udd0ac59201]Man's Search for Meaning[/udd0ac59201] is about his experiences in a concentration camp; and he writes about his experiences with more clarity and lucidity than most people do about their daily lives. Not at all your typical "Jews in WWII" book, and fairly short (barely breaks 100 pages). Watch that video and consider that this guy still manages to stay so focused and insightful after living in a concentration camp for years.

I read "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" recently, and really enjoyed it. I read a lot for work, so I tend to read fiction outside of work. That said, I read "Team of Rivals," and "Andrew Carnegie" as well. I just ordered "Hot, Flat, and Crowded," but haven't started it yet. I guess I'm all over the place.

Yes, I feel very much that way. I get far more enjoyment and entertainment from reading than from watching. Now when I do watch TV I'm a snob about quality, hence the thousands I've spent on HT gear, but it could never replace reading.

BTW I noticed I left out the word 'time' in my above post, as in "I don't have time to read as much as I used to..." Very important distinction! )

What about combing books and t.v.?

I just started reading Pahalniuk's [u1db8b91a33]Choke[/u1db8b91a33], want to get it done before I see the movie (assuming I'm not too cheap to wait for it to come out on DVD).

I love reading, especially horror and thriller, e.g. Stephen King, Lovecraft, Dean Koontz, etc. Much of my reading lately, though, has been my school textbooks.

Call me a geek, I love Popular Science Mag. Walden is a great book! Other then that, does reading news updates online count? The Show Fringe is getting very interesting!

Pahalniuk is amazing, I have to agree with you though - Choke was really great, better than survivor. But I don't find a lot of people that agree with me.

Has anyone heard of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

I just bought that today because of the hype it got, apparently it surpassed the last harry potter book in sales or something

Its so big that they made a movie out of it, coming in a month or two I think

My wife's into fantasy and mythology books so I bought her the first one in that series and she loved it, then promptly bought the other three and loved those too.

I started reading Survivor but never got around to finishing it. Choke was awesome though, and the movie was pretty good too. Anyone else see it?
