No, I actually saw something on the discovery channel about this, they had a special way they made it so it can be narrow, yet stand up to major storms. I forget what they did, I think I saw it on mega builders or something.

yeah... well the twin towers weren't supposed to fall from a plane hitting it either... anything that tall can't really be all that safe.

WTC didn't fall from the impact of the planes. It fell because superheated burning jet fuel melted and weakened the building's internal structural supports, causing a pancake from the top down. It was designed to withstand just about any sort of external, natural event, but was never designed for that. A big enough, hot enough fire will destroy just about anything man can build, but that sort of fire rarely happens in nature or by accident.
Name any skyscraper besides WTC that has ever fallen. ;)
Tall buildings are built to withstand natural elements. Look at the Sears Tower in Chicago, once the tallest building after the Empire State Building, in what many consider windiest city in the country. They're built to flex and sway in the wind, when you're on the top floors you can actually feel the building move. Most are also built to sway with earthquakes as well, with dampers in the foundation that acts as shock absorbers.

You have a greater chance of dying on the ground than in a skyscraper

WTC 7[=http//www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/nyregion/22wtccnd.html]WTC 7 ;)[/quote678330bb01]
P Bah, I consider that WTC. Even if not hit directly by a plane, it was hit with enough fire, heat, and shock from the twin towers collapse.
Not saying NO other skyscraper has ever fallen -- there have probably been a few around the world, but none that I recall ever hearing reported, and of course none of the scale of WTC.
So neener, neener!

FYI for those who are not aware.
The government of Dubai has made a lot of cash by resourcing it's vast oil supply. People from Dubai have experienced tremendous luxuries and a high standard of living, well except for migrant workers brought in from China, India, and Singapore.
Dubai has long been known as a wealthy state. Their main cash cow is oil exportation and the sultan of Dubai is worried that once Dubai's oil runs out its economy will collapse. Dubais economy is heavily dependant on the production and sale of oil.
So, the Sultan has proactively decided to use Dubai's untapped resources to keep the economic boom going. Dubai has beach front property and has near tropical weather making it an ideal vacation destination. Only problem with buildng in Dubai is space limitations. Thus contractors have sought to build out into the sea. This is all at the request of the sultan and his desire to make Dubai the premeire vacation destination for the wealthy.
They have taken vast projects such as the world and palm islands.(islands built from scracth out in the middle of the sea) They've also created the Burj al arab, the world tallest hotel building. And now theyve built this new world tallest skyscraper.
All this construction is not too show off. It's too keep the economic boom going and to ensure that western money will keep flowing into Dubai long after its oil supply has run dry.
