I would say It's Pretty Official: DHL Lost My Ipod

In short, DHL sucks @ss.
I was supposed to receive my Ipod on Tuesday. But Monday I learned that they accidental sent my Ipod all the way to California. When I called them on March 1st, they claimed that the package was delayed 1 business day because of their mistake. Fine. I expected to receive my Ipod yesterday. I called once more only to find out that they Ipod is still on some random truck driving from California to New York and as a result delivery would be delayed 1 more day. I was already mad as hell but I figured I should call back just to find out how 3 different customer service reps could have misinformed me about what was supposed to be a 1 day delay.
When I call, some idiot customer service rep tells me that the Ipod was never shipped to California at all. No no, it was on its way from Michigan to New York but bad weather has been the source of delay all along. I hang up the phone still confused... So I call back once more hoping to receive some sort of explanation for these different stories, it turns out that that yes, the ipod was shipped to California by mistake but I was told that all should go well and that the Ipod should arrive today. So I went to bed yesterday feeling some closure despite the whole ordeal, only to wake up and find out through my tracking page that the Ipod still isn't here. In fact, it still appears as if it is in transit from California because as far as I can tell, that was the location of the last scan.
Realization began to set in.
I just got off the phone with another customer serve rep who believes that if in fact the Ipod has not reached NY by this time, it is most likely lost. She promised to investigate the situation further to see if my package is finlay in NY but just not yet scanned.
Great. Just great.
I have learned that I shall never again trust DHL with any of my mail. Never. Do you know how many complaints people have filed against dhl for their lack of competence? It seems like this is some sort of disturbing trend for them. There is even a dhlcomplaints.com website. I cant believe this.
Why cant they just us UPS like everyone else. Who even uses DHL? This is the one time dhl has been responsible for shipping something for me and they messed up big time.

I cant do anthing about it. They wont accept any responsibility. They just promised to try to locate the package by tomorrow but advised me to have another one sent by the vendor. Send another one so they can fudge it up again? I just tried to contact Gratis about the possibility of them sending another one. I'm pissed because I don't even know if they'll be willing to send another ipod and if they do, who knows when that will happen, I'll be stuck waiting gor God knows how long. I don't understand why this had to happen to me. Why?
I don't have much to go on. The Ipod is lost between California and New York. It's so screwed up that it's almost comical.

Thanks
They've put a tracker on it and I'm supposed to hear from them in 24 to 48 hours.
But really, if the thing was heading in some direction since Monday it should have been there already.
I really just want to scream at the top of my lungs right now.

how the heck could DHL say they have no responsibility for it? that's bull. dude their the ones that totaly screwed it over!
do they have something in the contrat when you ship that releases them from any sort of screw ups they do? that would be totaly retarded. but even if they did, I'm not sure if it would apply to you since you didn't see a contract or anything...
if you don't get your ipod from them I'd seriously talk to some legal expert and see what sort of recourse you have...
Oh my gosh, that is absolutely terrible! I'm SO sorry, Narakukuku. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that it miraculously arrives soon.
In terms of shipping insurance, etc., I guess that would be something that would have been taken care of on Gratis' end. I wonder if they send out all their ipods with some sort of shipping insurance? If DHL is no longer of any help, hopefully Gratis will be understanding. You may have to get some kind of proof from DHL that they actually lost it... maybe have them write a letter on their letterhead or something. Maybe Gratis has a procedure for that.
It's very possible that you're not the first person this has happened to, and Gratis will be ready and willing to help. The sheer volume of ipods they send out, combined with the incompetence you claim is rampant among DHL, means they must have some kind of contingency plan in place. If it doesn't arrive soon, email Gratis and see what they can do.
Again, I'm SO sorry. I can't even imagine how you must feel right now. After all that work... (

Gratis purchases the ipods and send them to a vendor who then ships the ipods out using dhl. I think it would be up to Gratis whether or not the choose to stick with the same vendor or dhl.
If the Ipod wasn't insured, cant do a thing. I can only ask that another be sent if this one is truly lost.

Heh...DHL returned my iPod photo after two failed delivery attempts. Didn't bother me too much, except that it was already sold and the buyer intended it as a gift!!! STUPID DHL!

I think since you have proof that it was scanned in CA when it was supposed to go to NY you should be able to fight gratis rather easily to send another.

03-03-2005 10:34:36
Well you can always prove to gratis that you never recieved it cause DHL needs your signature to drop the item off. And DHL does take responsibility i believe you may need to go to the local office to get something done

that sucks. isnt the shipper responsible though, since it was in their possession when they lost it and it was your item?
if nothing works out, try sending a lawsuit threat and demand for the MSRP price of the ipod ($300).

DHL is pathetic, I ordered an amplifier on ebay that was shipped via DHL ... when the package arrived it appeared as though the DHL truck had backed-up over the package and ran it over.
The amp was OK, but the box was dirty and smashed to all hell.
NEVER, FOR ANY REASON, USE DHL!!!!

I'm sorry you had to find out this way, but I've said this all along.
DHL=GARBAGE. (
Even before they got into being a domestic carrier, they sucked at International shipping, and the company they absorbed to become a domestic carrier, Airborne Express, sucked ass to begin with.
I hope things work out for you, though. )

03-03-2005 15:42:28
man, i feel sorry for you. DHL is scum though when it comes to shipping, especially our ipods because that is the exact same thing i had trouble with them about.
many people prob remember my trouble. they said they delivered it, when in fact the driver picked a random house on the next street over (which he though was my street) decided that since the house has no nu,mbers it must be mine by process of elimination. ignored the giant bright blue "signature required" sticker, and left it in front of this random house. it took a couple hours of yelling at them to get it straight. and i do mean yelling, since they were trying to tell them that their bright yellow truck was on my 1/8 mile dead end street and even though i was standing in the middle of the fucking road, i couldn't see it somehow...
back to the topic. I'm pretty sure the packages are insured since on my shipping thing on line from DHL it said Apple ipod in the info area or something of that sort. they are completely responsible for the package, since when they initially receive it it no long is the company who sent it's problem. call them back, demand to speak to their manager until you reach someone high enough who realizes what the fuck is going on.
yelling sometimes can be a hindrance on your path, but alas other time it is the only way. good luck.

DHL is much cheaper to ship with than UPS/FedEx, especially in bulk which is why Gratis uses them. They are (in my experience - working in an office when we used to send 100 packages a day) the most reliable of the major shippers, especially after they bought Airborne Express. And the reason you see a dhlsucks.com website is because noone ever praises them when they get 99.9% of their packages delivered ontime. But that doesn't help you.
A couple of suggestions.
1) keep a tiny log of who you called and when and what they said.
2) do NOT yell at them on the phone. The CSR will care much less about your package if you yell at them rather than if you're friendly and cheerful. I've found that laughing about it actually makes them feel sorry for you and make more of an effort to help you out.
3) I shipped quite a bit of stuff by UPS (so I'm not sure if this applies to DHL) to myself (I was moving across country) and some of it arrived damaged. I filed claims with UPS as the recipient and they wrote me checks for the full value of the items, because they were insured. For UPS insurance costs like $0.40 per $100 of value - I would expect DHL is similar, and as such hope that Gratis insured it.
4) See if you can't submit an inquiry to gratis, and explain what's going on to them. You'll get a stock reply, but you will have opened the chain of communication.
5) I ordered a new IBM laptop earlier this year and FedEx lost it for a couple of days. I was pissed! For a while they thought it had been stolen out of their warehouse, but in the end they found it and it was delivered and all was good.
Dunno if any of that helps you.

[quote71a4235322="doylnea"]I would expect DHL is similar, and as such hope that Gratis insured it.[/quote71a4235322]when I got my ipod from gratis, it came with signature required and no insurance. that was 2 months ago, dont know about now.

Okay, the ipod hasn't turned up yet.
I've sent a customer service inqury and have yet to hear anything from Gratis.
Would anyone know how I could get in contact with them?
DHL is now telling me that if I file a lost claim it will take 30-60 days for them to make a decision. This is just not an option.
Is there any precedent for something like this?
I'm afraid that if Gratis tells me to wait another week to make it 15 days since the Ipod was shipped, I will end up with no Ipod until April.
I don't know what to do.

Contact a mod, maybe one of them can put you touch with someone at Gratis, or pass the word on to them.
Honestly though, did you read my other post and do any of the things I suggested? Gratis takes more than 1 day to respond to CS inquiries - I hope that inquiry was thorough enough that they won't have to ask for further information. If it wasn't you should go back and add another comment to the submission with any additional facts that may help your inquiry.
This really isn't Gratis's problem though. They contracted with DHL to deliver - once DHL took possession of the Ipod, it was their responsibility to deliver it, or compensate you for losing it.

I've already sent Gratis a detailed inquiry including my order info, tracking status, and full explanation of the mess up.
I also sent a follow up informing them that the DHL has been unable to locate the the package even after performing an all station trace. They explained that there is a possibility that the package may be found but who knows if that is 1 week or 1 month from now.
And this is Gratis's policy on lost packages
2. Delivery of Product
(a) All orders are mailed to the address provided by the user at the time the user orders the product. It is a user's responsibility to verify that the address provided is correct. Gratis Internet is not responsible for lost orders stemming from incorrect shipping addresses, theft, or erroneous deliveries. In the event that a situation arises necessitating package forwarding, Gratis Internet is in no way responsible for ensuring delivery.
(b) If a user does not receive a product, he or she should make sure that they have waited the appropriate time period and confirm that the shipping address given is indeed correct. [b4135b6ab1f] In the event that an item is lost, Gratis Internet will make a reasonable effort to track the package and replace it if necessary. [/b4135b6ab1f]
(c) For any product that has confirmed delivery via a tracking number, Gratis Internet will not resend the order or refund the points back to a user's account.[b4135b6ab1f] If an item is lost, a user can only receive a replacement product and cannot receive his or her points or credit back for an order. We reserve the right to refuse a replacement order or point or credit refund. [/b4135b6ab1f]
I've spoken with DHL more times than I can count on my fingers since Monday when I noticed that the Ipod mysteriously ended up in Fresno, California. I was never rude to the representatives even though I felt like yelling most of the time. I have a representative currently monitoring the all station trace for me and she herself left a message I have still have recorded on my phone confirming that the package is lost and that I should contact the vendor/seller for help. And evidently based on their Terms and Conditions it looks like Gratis is wiling to replace lost orders. I've done everything I could possibly do up until this point. I'm willing to wait another week to see if the package will turn up but beyond that, I think I [i4135b6ab1f]will[/i4135b6ab1f] try to work with Gratis and see if they can send a replacement.

This is funny.
Last night it looked like DHL recovered the package and managed to get it to New York. Things were looking up, the Ipod was 40 miles away from my location in NY. I was told it should arrive this morning in fact and be delievered before 1100 AM.
Then later that evening according to tracking information it was in PA departing origin. From NY to PA.
It is still in "departing origin" from PA when it should have arrived to NY this morning. Its a three hour drive. Guess what this means?
It means one again DHL has routed my Ipod to the wrong place. Only God knows where the thing is headed. Only God knows.
Fuck DHL.
