All lolworthiness aside, if you really don't know how to use tabs in Firefox they're great. Just click down on your scroll wheel to open a new tab (called a middle click) then middle click a tab to close it. I also set mine up so I can just move my mouse to anywhere at the top (near the tab area or above it in the URL bar area) and scroll my wheel to move through tabs. It's SO much faster than looking for the right tab and clicking it. I've tweaked the shit out of my Firefox to the point where I get all pissed off when I'm using someone else's browser because none of the shortcut things I've set up work. lol

I always use CTRL + T to open a new tab, and click the tiny X on the tab (or press CTRL + W) to close it.

Those tiny x buttons on the tabs are only good for laptops. I took them off because they bothered me.

^^ Same. I just use the search button on my mouse to close tabs. No need for 'x' button even on laptops (middle click = click right and left at same time).
